WASHINGTON—A federal judge declined Wednesday to recuse herself from Donald Trump’s prosecution on charges he conspired to remain in power following his 2020 election loss, rejecting the former president’s argument that her past critical statements about the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol created the appearance of bias. Trump’s defense lawyers had asked Judge Tanya Chutkan earlier this month to step away from the case, saying that her past comments about the former president’s role in the Capitol riot were “inherently disqualifying.” The lawyers pointed to a pair of sentencing hearings for Trump supporters convicted of storming the Capitol, including one in which Chutkan described the Jan. 6, 2021, attack as “nothing less than an attempt to violently overthrow the government, the legally, lawfully, peacefully elected government, by individuals who were mad that their guy lost.”
