Lue lands in L.A. despite Lakers fallout
Lue coached the Cavaliers for three full seasons from 2015-18, a run that included winning the 2016 NBA title. The Cavaliers fired him after an 0-6 start to the 2018-19 season.
Lue was in talks with the Los Angeles Lakers for their head coaching position this offseason before negotiations reportedly broke down over the Lakers’ offer.
In addition to Lue reportedly being unhappy with the team’s insistence on shaping his coaching staff, he was primarily displeased with the three-year offer that coincided with the end of LeBron James’ contract and wasn’t commensurate with the five-year deal standard for experienced NBA coaches.
Reunion with Doc
Now Lue will man the sideline with the rival Clippers with his coaching mentor Rivers, who gave him his first assistant coaching job with the Boston Celtics in 2011.
