Tyler Vietti outduels older brother to win city golf title
Aug. 9—The Vietti brothers dueled it out for the Logansport Men's City Golf Championship this weekend at Dykeman Park Golf Course.
Younger brother Tyler Vietti shot a four-round total of 5-over 285 to win by five strokes over his older brother Trevor Vietti.
At age 18 Tyler Vietti became the youngest ever city tournament champion. Jacob Murray was 19 when he won in 2006.
Earlier this year Bob Rothgeb became the oldest golfer to win the Cass County Match Play Championship at age 68.
Tyler Vietti entered Sunday's final round at even par after shooting rounds of 72, 69 and 69 in his first three days of the tournament. He shot a 75 on Sunday to win by five strokes.
"It's a pretty cool experience winning the city and getting my name on the board," he said. "One of those things growing up that you always look at and hope one day your name ends up back there."
Tyler entered Sunday's final round with a four-shot lead over Trevor and an 11-shot lead over third place Fred Hinkle, so it was basically a two-man race on Sunday.
Tyler hit a couple wayward tee shots on the front nine and Trevor birdied the par five seventh hole to cut the lead to one shot. Tyler came up with an eagle on the par five 13th to stretch the lead back out to three strokes en route to winning by five.
"There were a lot of fun, once-in-a-lifetime moments playing against him in something like this," Tyler said. "I found myself trying to root for him to make putts and pull off golf shots more than anything else."
Tyler said it's usually close when the two play against each other in golf.
"Yeah, most of the time it's within a stroke or two either way between the two of us," he said.
Trevor, 20, is about 20 months older than Tyler. They were high school teammates at Logansport for three years. Trevor recently completed his freshman year at Trine and Tyler is a recent LHS graduate who will attend Purdue.
"Throughout all four rounds of the tournament I thought I played pretty well," Trevor said. "My last nine of the tournament I didn't hit the shots I needed to to keep the pressure on Tyler and just fell back too far with a couple holes left."
Trevor also finished runner-up at the county championship to Rothgeb. He is a member of the Trine men's golf team.
"I love playing at Trine and the university as a whole," he said. "It's a great college to attend and have a balanced athlete life and school life. My goal is to make the top 12 for varsity. We have somewhere around 35 guys on the team so it's pretty competitive to make top 12."
The Vietti's father is the club professional/superintendent at Dykeman, Dean Vietti. Trevor majors in business/golf management at Trine.
"I've seen my dad work in the golf industry and it's something I've always wanted to do since I was younger," Trevor said.
Tyler plans to major in turf management and science at Purdue in hopes of becoming a golf course superintendent.
Scott Harris placed third 10 shots back of Tyler Vietti with a 295. Hinkle placed fourth with a 296 and Rod Hall placed fifth with a 298. Complete results are in today's Scoreboard.
