Watertown Fire Rescue crews were called out early Sunday morning for a report of a barn on fire.

The call came in shortly before 4 a.m. at 125 10th Ave. N.W., according to a news release from Watertown Fire Rescue. Responders found a two-story detached 120-year-old barn fully engulfed.

Initial flames were 25 to 30 feet high, according to the release, and ignited branches of the trees above the barn, causing burning embers and branches to fall on an adjacent home and into the street.

The Watertown Police Department helped evacuate the family in the adjacent home for safety reasons, and fire crews used water to protect the home and attack the fire on the barn, per the release.

The fire was quickly extinguished, but crews were on scene for the next three and a half hours extinguishing hot spots.

The barn was used to house four dogs, according to the release, and emergency responders initially feared some of the dogs died in the fire, but all four dogs were later found running together in the northwestern part of Watertown.

While the fire was contained to the barn, the neighbor's vinyl fence was damaged and the neighboring home had some light smoke damage.

The barn and its contents are a total loss. The family in the neighboring home was allowed back inside their home.
