Two national retailers with VT stores are struggling to survive

Party City and Bed Bath & Beyond, with three stores in Vermont between them, are skimming the waves of financial solvency, but so far have kept their outlets in Vermont open.

Bed Bath & Beyond has stores in Williston and Rutland, while Party City has a store in South Burlington, adjacent to University Mall.

Party City filed for bankruptcy on Jan. 17 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas, according to USA Today, in an attempt to restructure and reduce the company's debt. There are more than 800 Party City stores in more than 45 states, as well as a website for online shopping.

Bed Bath & Beyond is on the "brink of bankruptcy," according to USA Today, announcing the closure of 87 more stores in 30 states in addition to the 119 stores it had already closed in September 2022 and January 2023.
