Two dead, two injured in Freehold multi-car collision

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP - Two people died Sunday because of a multi-vehicle accident here that also left two motorists hospitalized with severe injuries, acting Monmouth County Prosecutor Lori Linskey said.

The deadly chain of events occurred shortly before 1:30 p.m. at southbound Route 9 and westbound Route 33, Linskey said in a news release.

An investigation revealed that a 74-year-old Manalapan woman was driving a 2019 Lexus NX south on Route 9 when her vehicle sideswiped two others before rear-ending a 2017 Honda CR-V, which then rear-ended a 2009 Scion, the news release said.

A 52-year-old Marlboro woman who was a passenger in the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene, the release said. Another passenger in the Honda, a 61-year-old Marlboro man, was taken to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, it said.

The driver of the Honda, a 21-year-old Marlboro man, was in critical condition at a local hospital. The driver of the Lexus also suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital.

Other drivers and passengers sought medical attention for minor injuries, the news release said.

The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, Monmouth County Serious Collision Analysis Response Team and township police are investigating the accident and are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or who has information about it to call prosecutor’s Detective.
