Twitter reacts to Trump tweet of Larry David mocking Trump supporters

On Monday night, President Trump tweeted an expletive-riddled scene from the HBO hit show Curb Your Enthusiasm in which Larry David, playing a caricature of himself, puts on a MAGA hat to de-escalate a potentially dangerous situation. In the scene, David nearly hits a motorcyclist with his car and the man immediately starts threatening violence. David puts on the hat and the man, presumably seeing a kindred spirit, no longer wants to hurt David, just telling him to be more careful before riding off.

But the president may not have been aware that the point was actually to mock his supporters. In an earlier scene, David gets the idea to use a MAGA hat as a way to get out of having lunch with an acquaintance after his manager Jeff Green (Jeff Garlin) refuses to golf with a Trump supporter.

“I’m not playing with him, he’s a Trump supporter. Never play with a Trump supporter,” Green says. “See him around town with that hat: Make America Great Again. I don’t need that crap. He makes me not want to be anywhere near him.”

David not only gets out of the lunch, he also wears it to keep the seats next to him at a sushi bar unoccupied because nobody wants to sit by him. David refers to the hat as “a great people repellant.”

Twitter users were quick to pick up on the irony.

While at least one user questioned the message Trump was sending.

In a recent interview, David was asked if he was worried the episode might alienate fans of the show who support Trump. It’s safe to say he’s not concerned.

“Alienate yourselves,” David replied. “Go, go and alienate. You have my blessing.”

Curb Your Enthusiasm airs Sundays at 10:30 p.m. on HBO.
