Twin Valley grad R.J. Wren shoots 6-over 76 in the first round of the U.S. Amateur

Aug. 16—Twin Valley grad R.J. Wren shot a 6-over 76 Monday during the first round of U.S. Amateur at Arcola Country Club in Paramus, N.J.

Wren, 24, made bogeys on 1, 2, 7, 8 and 9, as well as a double bogey on 6, to make the turn at 7-over. He had his only birdie of the round on the par-5th 12 and played that back nine at 1-under 34.

He will tee off in the second round Tuesday at 12:46 p.m. on the ninth hole of The Ridgewood Country Club (par 71).

Following the second round, the top 64 players will advance to match play, which runs through Sunday. A playoff will be held, if necessary, to determine the top 64.

With players still on the course, the projected cutline for a playoff was at 2-over.

Wren, a University of Delaware grad, finished second last month in a qualifying tournament at Applebrook Golf Club in Malvern to advance.

He won the Hawley Quier Memorial in 2019 and the Berks County Golf Association Match Play Championship in 2018. He played in this year's BCGA Match Play in May.
