Twenty students receive Block family scholarships

May 6—Twenty area high school graduates have been selected as recipients of this year's Mr. and Mrs. William Block, Jr. Scholarship and will receive funding toward their tuition to local colleges and universities.

"The Toledo Area has supported me for many years and this is the best way that I can think of to give back. We do 20 scholarships a year for $4,000 each, and we'll keep doing that until the money runs out," Mr. Block said.

The scholarship, administered by the Greater Toledo Community Foundation, is awarded annually to graduates of Lucas County or Wood County high schools who are pursuing either two- or four-year undergraduate degrees at Lourdes University, Bowling Green State University, Owens Community College, or the University of Toledo.

The scholarship is provided by Mr. Block in memory of Carol Z. Block.

Mr. Block is a member of the board of directors at Block Communications Inc., the parent company of The Blade. In addition, Mr. Block previously served as president and chairman of BCI, and as co-publisher of The Blade and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette from 1990 to 2001.
