Twenty-four area wrestlers appear in state rankings

Jan. 20—A total of 24 area wrestlers and two teams appeared in the borofanohio.net rankings as the state tournament trail begins in five weeks.

In Division III, Edison is second in the team rankings and is currently projected to finish with 87 points at the state championships. Legacy Christian, which finished ahead of the Chargers last season for the state team title, is again No. 1 with 146 points.

At 113 pounds, junior Max Hermes remains the top-ranked wrestler in the weight class. Hermes won the state title last season at 106 pounds.

Also for the Chargers, freshman Abe Hermes is No. 3 at 106, while junior Duke Hermes (150) and senior Logan Lloyd (190) are both ranked No. 5 in their respective weight classes. Lloyd placed fourth at the 2021 state championships.

Senior Remington Bauer is ranked sixth at 157 for Edison, which is where he placed at last season's state meet. Classmates Jacob Thompson (215) and Jackson Berardi (285) are each ranked No. 7 at their weights.

Also in Div. III, Monroeville is projected to finish in seventh as a team with 35 points. The Eagles were projected 10th in the previous rankings earlier this month.

Senior Alec Homan is currently ranked second at 132 pounds, while sophomore Ashton Homan is fourth at 138. Also for the Eagles, junior Hunter Vogus is fourth at 144 and freshman Brencyn Evans is new to the rankings at No. 26 at 150.

Last season, Ashton Homan placed third at the state championships, while older sibling Alec finished seventh and also was on the podium.

St. Paul sophomore Casper Caizzo is ranked fourth at 106 pounds, as is senior and returning state qualifier Will Stieber at 150. Senior Aiden Naseman is 22nd at 138 and senior Harley Stoll — appearing in the rankings for the first time this season — is 23rd at 132 for the Flyers.

Plymouth has six wrestlers ranked, including Nick Roberts at 12th at 113 pounds and Colton Sparks at 15th at 175. Andrew Miller (126) and Shae Sparks (150) are both ranked 18th, while Cameron Wagers is 23rd at 106 and Jacob Robinson is 24th at 157.

Shae Sparks and Robinson are both new to the rankings for the Big Red.

Willard had a pair of wrestlers appear in the rankings, led by senior Shadrick Slone at 165 pounds. Slone remains the No. 1-ranked wrestler in the weight. He was a state finalist last season for Edison. Teammate Connor Robbins (126) is 15th.

New London sophomore Markell Mitchell is ranked 11th at 120, up one spot from 12th in the previous rankings.

In Div. II, Norwalk senior Kaleb Ruhl is No. 23 at 120 pounds.

The Firelands Conference championships are slated for Feb. 6 at New London. The Sandusky Bay Conference championships for the Lake Division will be on Feb. 9 at Norwalk High School, with the Bay and River divisions slated for Feb. 10 at Port Clinton.

Sectional competition in Div. II-III will be held on Feb. 25-26, followed by the district tournaments on March 4-5. The top 16 wrestlers in each weight class from the district will advance to the state championships, slated for March 11-13 at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus.
