Tupelo Schools report 58 student COVID-19 cases during seventh week

Sep. 22—TUPELO — The Tupelo Public School District reported 58 positive COVID-19 cases among students during its seventh week, down from 76 reported the previous week.

There were 12 cases among students in pre-K through second grade, 16 in third through fifth grade, 12 in sixth through eighth grade and 18 at the high school.

There were 113 total students considered close contacts to a positive case. A total of 171 students were quarantined during the seventh week, significantly lower than 233 quarantines the previous week.

Only about 2.4% of the district's 7,000 students were quarantined, down from more than 3% the previous week.

Masks have been required for all students and staff, regardless of vaccination status, since school started Aug. 4.

According to the district, all positive cases have been self-reported and occurred outside of school.

The district also reported five positive cases among teachers — one in pre-K through second grade, one in third through fifth grade, two in sixth through eighth grade and one at the high school. Eight teachers were quarantined.

Zero members of the support staff tested positive for the virus, and only two were quarantined.
