Tuesday's HS roundup: Exeter, Dover boys tennis advance to quarterfinals

EXETER – The Exeter High School boys tennis team won five of the six singles matches, swept doubles and beat No. 10 Concord, 8-1 in a Division I preliminary round match on Tuesday.

The seventh-seeded Blue Hawks will face No. 2 Bedford on Thursday in a quarterfinal round game.

Charlie Gaughan (No. 1, 8-0), Robert Berthel (No. 2, 8-4), Ian Surprenant (No. 3, 8-0), Liam Simard (No. 5, 8-4) and Ryan Byrnes (No. 6, 8-3) all won their respective singles matches.

Gaughan and Simard won 9-8 (12-10) at No. 1 doubles, Dominic Theos and Byrnes won 8-6 at No. 2, and Berthel and Oliver Beradino won 8-2 at No. 3.

DOVER – The fifth-seeded Green Wave advanced to Thursday’s quarterfinal round with this preliminary round win.

Dover will visit No. 4 Derryfield on Thursday.

Griffin Leach (No. 1, 8-1), James Weete (No. 2, 8-1), and Judah Payeur (No. 4, 9-7) won in singles action for Dover.

Leach and Declan Sieks won 8-0 at No. 1 doubles, while Weete and Colby Bigelow won 8-2 at No. 2.

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine – Senior Rachel Kovach and Sophomore Ivy Landry secured this Class A South win with a 6-4, 6-4 win in doubles.

Freshmen Tia Anderson and Lucy Parker both won in singles action for the Hawks.

CAPE ELIZABETH, Maine – Rose Pavuk had five goals and four assists for Class B York in this loss at Class A Cape Elizabeth.

Clara Pavuk added foru goals and two assists for the Wildcats. Grace Clayton had two goals and two assists, while Cary Drake (two goals, assist), and Reese Walenta (goal) all figured in the scoring.

NORTHWOOD - Sophie Royal had seven goals and four assists, leading Oyster River to this Division II win.

Elsa Pueschel had five goals and two assists for the Bobcats, while Mackenzie Cook had three goals, and Waverly Oake-Libow had two goals and three assists.

Ganya Brooks and Elizabeth Walent both had a goal and an assist, while Emy Przybylski, Tess Pueschel and Mia Weglarz all had one assist.

Oyster River goalies Sydney Haines (four saves) and Paige Haug (two) split time in the net.

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine – Mackenzie Davis had two hits and three RBIs for Marshwood (2-10) in this Class A South game.

Kaylynn Decker struck out five over five innings, earning the win. Bella Pomarico (two hits, two RBIs), Lindsay Bennett (double), Faith Tsakiris (hit, two RBIs) and Louise Roper (triple, RBI) led the offense.

NEWMARKET - Riley Andriski homered and had three RBIs, leading Newmarket to this Division IV win.

Gia Tilton and Kierra Souphakhot both had two hits for the Mules. Souphakhot struck out 12 and allowed four hits over seven innings, earning the win.

DOVER – Freshman Abby Gaynor threw her third one-hitter of the season as the Saints improved to 10-4 with this five-inning, Division III win.

Ashleigh von der Linden’s two-run home run in the fifth ended the game. She had three hits, three RBIs and scored twice.

Gaynor had three hits and three RBIs, while Sophie Graziano (two hits, four runs, RBI), and Elizabeth Flynn (two hits, two runs) contributed.

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine – Andrew Gray allowed four hits and struck out six over six innings, leading Marshwood (6-6-1) to this Class A South win.

Tyler Hussey had three hits and an RBI for the Hawks, while Ronan Casey and Liam Tiernan both had two.

NEWMARKET – Nick Nigro, Caleb Smith, Kaleb Cecchetti, and Cooper Mills all had an RBI for Newmarket (10-5) in this Division IV win.

Nigro struck out seven and allowed three hits over 3 1/3 innings, earning the win.

VOLLEYBALL

HAMPTON – Noah Molnar, Winnacunnet’s lone senior, was honored before the game ahead of his final home match.

Individual game scores were 25-20, 25-16, 25-14. Winnacunnet is now 8-6.

Molnar finished his two-year career with 146 kills, 223 digs and 35 aces.

Joshua Schaake led Winnacunnet (8-6) with seven kills, while Conor Fenlon had five. Michael Smith added 14 digs.

HAMPTON – The Warriors improved to 7-5 with this 25-17, 13-25, 15-10 win.

Ben Joiner, Murphy Wall and Edgar Hansen played well for Winnacunnet.
