The European Union will make pharmaceutical companies respect contracts they have signed for the supply of COVID-19 vaccines, European Council President Charles Michel said on Sunday. Pfizer Inc last week said it was temporarily slowing supplies to Europe to make manufacturing changes that would boost output. On Friday, AstraZeneca also said that initial deliveries to the region will fall short because of a production glitch.

German car manufacturer Volkswagen is looking into possible claims for damages against its suppliers Bosch and Continental due to a lack of semiconductors, Automobilwoche magazine reported on Sunday. Automakers around the world are shutting assembly lines due to problems in the delivery of semiconductors, which in some cases have been exacerbated by the former Trump administration's actions against key Chinese chip factories. The shortage has affected Volkswagen, Ford Motor Co, Subaru Corp, Toyota Motor Corp, Nissan Motor Co Ltd, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and other car makers.
Chinese air force planes including 12 fighter jets entered Taiwan's air defence identification zone for a second day on Sunday, Taiwan said, as tensions rise near the island just days into U.S. President Joe Biden's new administration. China views democratically ruled Taiwan as its own territory, and has in the past few months increased military activity near the island. But China's activities over the weekend mark a ratcheting up with fighters and bombers being dispatched rather than reconnaissance aircraft as had generally been the case in recent weeks.

Masked, socially distanced and each given their own pen to avoid spreading germs, Portugal headed to the polls on Sunday to vote for the largely ceremonial post of president even as coronavirus cases reach record levels. Opinion polls show that the incumbent, President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa of the centre-right Social Democratic Party, is likely to win with ease. Voters queued up as polls opened in the Lisbon parish of Santo Antonio, guided by red stickers on the ground marking the two-metre gap.

NEW YORK — Tuesday, the Hall of Fame will announce the results of the 2021 election and in the name of Hank Aaron, I’d really like to see the Baseball Writers Association hurl a shutout. To say the least, it was not a particularly appealing ballot given the fact that, based on last year’s voting, Curt Schilling, Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds were the leading candidates. This was never more ...
Israel expanded its COVID-19 vaccination drive on Sunday to include 16- to 18-year-olds in what the government described as an effort to enable their attendance at school exams. Israel, which has the world's fastest vaccine distribution rate, is hoping to begin reopening its economy next month. With regular imports of Pfizer Inc. vaccines, Israel has administered at least one dose to more than 25% of its 9 million population since Dec. 19, the Health Ministry says.

Shares of GameStop Corp. popped 51% on Friday after short seller Citron Research said that it will stop commenting on the video game retailer’s stock following the actions of an “angry mob.” The stock closed at $65.01 on Jan. 22. The move came after Citron Research had to postpone a planned livestream YouTube video, which would detail the five reasons GameStop (GME) stock will plunge back to $20 per share fast. The video did come out later than announced but not as a livestream event, following “multiple hacking attempts” on its Twitter account, according to Citron Research. “What Citron has experienced in the past 48 hours is nothing short of shameful and a sad commentary on the state of the investment community,” Citron’s Andrew Left wrote in a letter posted on Twitter. “We will no longer be commenting on GameStop, not because we don’t believe in our investment thesis, but rather the angry mob who owns this stock has spent the past 48 hours committing multiple crimes that I will be turning over to the FBI, SEC and other governmental agencies.” “This is not just name-calling and hacking but includes serious crimes such as harassment of minor children. We are investors who put safety and family first, and when we believe this has been compromised, it is our duty to walk away from a stock,” Left added. Meanwhile, GameStop posted in a Twitter post that a “bunch of Redditors with Asperger’s have collaborated to engineer the short squeeze of the decade by buying short-dated, out-of-the-money call options.” GameStop shares have spiked a whopping 1,513% over the past six months, while analysts have a Hold consensus on the stock. Out of the 6 analysts covering GME, 3 rate it as Hold, and 2 say Sell, and 1 analyst says Buy. (See GME stock analysis on TipRanks). Following the recent rally, the average price target of $10.72 suggests shares are poised to pull back 84% over the coming year. Meanwhile, Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter believes that “GameStop is well-positioned to be a primary beneficiary of the new console launches, and we remain quite optimistic that it will return to profitability by FY:21.” However, for now Pachter reiterated a Hold rating on the stock with a $16 price target as he argues that the “global pandemic remains a hurdle, and we expect it to remain a hurdle until the majority of GameStop’s addressable market is vaccinated.” “We have a positive bias, and we think the company is positioned to generate solid profits in 2021 and beyond, but until we have greater visibility, we are unprepared to upgrade,” the analyst summed up. On TipRanks' Smart Score system, GME gets an 8 out of 10, indicating that the stock has strong potential to outperform market expectations.
