TSSAA Spring Fling top moments: Eagleville star, MTSU signee Nate Brewer wins Mr. Baseball

Eagleville senior outfielder and MTSU signee Nate Brewer was named Class 1A Mr. Baseball by Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association on Tuesday.

Brewer is hitting .459 with 10 doubles, five triples, 15 homers, 55 RBIs and 14 stolen bases.

"It feels pretty great even to be nominated, but to win it was quite a surreal feeling," Brewer said. "I'm just happy we could bring Mr. Baseball to Eagleville. I owe so much to my teammates. It's so much fun playing on a team with so many good hitters.

"Before I knew I was a finalist, I didn't think I had much of a shot. When we met today and I heard the great stats of the other two players, some doubt came into my mind. It was an awesome feeling hearing my name called."

Eagleville rolled to an 11-0 win over Bradford in the first round of the 1A state tournament Tuesday and will play the winner of Coalfield-Lookout Valley at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Eagleville.

Wilson, Oakland soccer get revenge, down Houston in OT

It took overtime, a lightning delay and a downpour to decide the Oakland-Houston Class AAA state soccer tournament quarterfinal match, but the Patriots advanced to the semifinals for the second straight season.

Brayden Wilson's goal in the 98th minute was the difference, as Oakland avenged a loss to Houston in last year's state semis, a match that went to penalty kicks before being decided.

"The guys are psyched," Oakland coach Jeff Porter said. "It's an incredible feeling to even be in the game against Houston, but to put them out, especially after they beat us on PKs last year, the feeling is incredible."

The match was scoreless into overtime, and six minutes into the first OT period the match was stopped for a lightning delay. Wilson's game-winner came in the second OT after play resumed.

Oakland will face another state power in the state semis at 7 p.m. Wednesday, facing Bearden.

Central Magnet track wins three titles

Central Magnet's track and field squad came away with three state champions Tuesday at MTSU's Dean Hayes Track and Soccer Complex.

Blake Yuenger (boys 3,200), Emma Kate Hamby (girls 3,200) and Samantha Ouellette (girls 1,600) all captured state titles.

“It was really close today. It was a really well-run meet," Ouellette said. "It was really fast. I didn’t have a lot of time in between. I knew I was going to be tired for the 800. I just gave my all for the 1,600 and saw what I had left for the 800.”

Yuenger was part of the Tigers' state championship cross country team last fall, while Hamby and Ouellette were members of the state champion Lady Tigers cross country team. Ouellette won the individual cross country title as well.

Stingy Linton leads Eagleville softball

Eagleville freshman pitcher Addisyn Linton is on a postseason run.

Linton has now allowed just one earned run in her past 28 innings, that one coming in a 2-1 win over Jo Byrns in the first round of the Class 1A state softball tournament Tuesday.

Linton allowed just three hits and two walks in a complete-game effort, striking out 10.

She was also the hitting star of the game, going 3-for-3 with a run and RBI in the victory. Bella Bain went 2-for-3 for the Lady Eagles, who play Dresden at 10 a.m. at McKnight Park in the winners bracket Wednesday.

Rebound time for Warriors, Lady Red Hawks

Riverdale's baseball team and Stewarts Creek's softball team all fell in first-round state tournament games Tuesday.

The Warriors dropped a 6-4 decision to Collierville and will play the loser of Hendersonville-Farragut after the completion of that game, which was suspended Tuesday because of weather.

Jaxon Pridgen was 2-for-5 with two RBIs while William Wexler, Caleb Jordan and Daniel Polanco all had two hits for Riverdale.

The Lady Red Hawks fell 3-0 to Farragut and will play in Wednesday's losers bracket against Coffee County at 11:30 a.m. at Starplex.
