It's Truly Bizarre What Different Places $1,000 Rent Will Get You In Every State In The US
If you've tried renting an apartment just about anywhere in the last couple of years, it may have come to your attention that IT IS VERY EXPENSIVE.

According to iProperty Management, the average rent in the United States in 2020 (the most recent year for which data is available) was $1,104. They also offer the median rent amount for each state as it's changed in the last 20 years, with adjustments for inflation.
Armed with that information, I looked at what you can get in each state with $1,000 rent (according to Zillow), and the results are pretty fascinating.
1.In Ozark, Alabama, you can get a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom 1300+ sq. ft. house with a new but modest kitchen, hardwood floors, and a fenced-in backyard.
The catch? The place needs a new fridge, new vanities, and lighting. You'll also have to upkeep the yard. The median price of rent in the state increased 17.23% from 2000 to 2020.
2.In Anchorage, Alaska, you can live in a 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom 625 sq. ft. apartment (on Forget Me Not Lane, very cute vibes) for $1,000 (plus electric).
You get walk-in closets and lots of sunlight while living on a cul-de-sac. Your landlord takes care of heat, trash, and water, and there's even laundry on site. The median rent in Alaska increased 8.32% from 2000 to 2020.
3.In the lovely Tuscon, Arizona, you can rent an 812 sq. ft. 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom apartment for $1,000. The place has in-unit laundry, a walk-in closet, and a covered parking spot.
Your landlord pays the homeowner's association (HOA), which covers water, sewer, trash, and community amenities. You'll need renter's insurance to seal the deal. Arizona's median rent has risen15.50% from 2000 to 2020.
4.If a 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom house that's 1,070 sq. ft. and has a fenced-in yard sounds good to you, check out a house like this in Searcy, Arkansas.
Median rent in Arkansas has gone up 6.36% from 2000 to 2020.
5.In Ridgecrest, California, you can score a 2 bedroom, 1.5 bathroom apartment that's 2,958 sq. ft.
The median rent in California has increased a whopping 40.30% from 2000 to 2020.
If you're dreaming of living in Los Angeles, you can get a 220 sq. ft. studio with 1 bathroom. It's minutes from downtown, but there's no kitchen or parking.
Nope, not kidding.
6.In Akron, Colorado, you can get a 1,080 sq. ft. 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom house with sweet built-in storage and an attached 1-car garage for $1,000.
There's even a fenced-in yard and storage shed. In Colorado, the average price of rent has increased 32.48% from 2000 to 2020.
7.Torrington, Connecticut, has this 733 sq. ft. 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom apartment on a private street. It's $1,000, but the renter has to handle utilities.
Connecticut's median rent has increased 12.23% from 2000 to 2020.
8.Wilmington, Delaware, offers a 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom apartment on the 3rd floor of a home. The 900 sq. ft. space is available at $975 each month (plus $50 for a parking spot).
From 2000 to 2020, median rent in Delaware increased 13.41%.
9.Looking at Orlando, Florida? There's a 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom, 850 sq. ft. apartment for rent for $1,000.
The median rent in Florida increased 25.41% from 2000 to 2020.
10.In Bremen, Georgia, $1,000 will get you a 900 sq. ft. 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom attached apartment.
In Georgia, the average rate has increased by 11.12% from 2000 to 2020.
11.In Kihei, Hawaii, a 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom 459 sq. ft. apartment. It's a rent-controlled building where water is included with rent, but the renter covers other utilities.
Hawaii has seen a steep median rent increase. It went up 37.62% from 2000 to 2020
12.Idaho Falls, Idaho, has a 780 sq. ft. 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom apartment for $1,000 ... but all utilities are paid to the city by the renter.
The median rent in Idaho has risen 10.96% from 2000 to 2020, data shows.
13.In East Peoria, Illinois, you can score a 1,446 sq. ft. house with 4 bedrooms and 1 bathroom.
Illinois' median rent has increased 9.48% from 2000 to 2020.
14.You can rent a townhouse in Muncie, Indiana, for $1,000. It's a 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom with hardwood floors, and a nice sized front porch.
There has been a 4.69% median rent increase from 2000 to 2020.
15.Pella, Iowa, has a 905 sq. ft. house for rent with 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom. It comes with a nice sized, but low maintenance yard to enjoy

16.For $1,000, you can call a duplex townhouse in Manhattan, Kansas, your home. It has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and is 1,250 sq. ft.
The median rent in Kansas has increased by 12.40% from 2000 to 2020.
17.Hopkinsville, Kentucky, has a 1,325 sq. ft. home for rent that has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
Kentucky's median rent has gone up by 12.80% from 2000 to 2020.
18.Louisiana has this beautiful 1,100 sq. ft. home in Bossier City to rent for $1K. The 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom space has a fenced-in yard, is pet friendly (which is becoming frustratingly rare), and has hardwood floors.
The median rent in Louisiana increased 20.67% from 2000 to 2020.
19.For $1,000 in Maine, you can rent a 2nd floor 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom apartment that's 800 sq. ft. in Rumford.
Maine's median rent increased by 13.67% from 2000 to 2020.
20.In Baltimore, Maryland, you can get a 900 sq. ft. 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom apartment with a bus stop outside your door.
The median rent in Maryland has risen 32.04% from 2000 to 2020.
21.You can settle down in a 2nd-floor apartment in Ware, Massachusetts, in a 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom apartment that includes a nice backyard and glorious deck.
Massachusetts' median rent has increased by 29.11% in 20 years.
22.Detroit, Michigan, has this sweet 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom 800 sq. ft. home for rent for $1,000. There's an in-unit washer/dryer, and it allows pets!
Michigan has had their average price of rent rise 5.61% from 2000 to 2020.
23.St. Paul, Minnesota, seems to be the best place for renters on a budget in the state. You can rent a 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, 1000 sq. ft. apartment with water and garbage covered. It has all new appliances, and pets "will be considered on a case-by-case basis."
Minnesota's median rent has gone up 16.56% from 2000 to 2020.
24.In Meridian, Mississippi, you can rent this lovely 3 bedroom, 1.5 bathroom home 1,320 sq. ft. home that's being updated as the owner tries to rent it out. You'll enjoy some new features to the home and also get a chance to enjoy the big front and back yards.
From 2000 to 2020, Mississippi's median rent has increased 14.93%.
25.St. Louis, Missouri offers this 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom home that's just under 800 sq. ft. The updated interior opens up to a big backyard.
The median rent in Missouri increased 11.89% from 2000 to 2020.
26.In Laurel, Montana, you can get a 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom triplex apartment.
Montana has seen their median rent rise by 20.72% from 2000 to 2020.
27.Omaha, Nebraska has a cozy 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom home just under 800 sq. ft.
Nebraska's median rent has increased 13.60% from 2000 to 2020.
28.This Las Vegas, Nevada apartment complex has 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom 665 sq. ft units for $1,000.

32.New York has different options depending on if you're upstate or downstate. In Rochester, New York, you can rent a 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment for $1,000.
New Yorkers have seen median rent rise by 26.49% from 2000 to 2020.
In the city, however, $1,000 looks more like renting a room, like this furnished one in Forest Hills.
33.Charlotte, North Carolina has options for renters, like this 287 sq. ft. studio that's both pet-friendly and newly renovated.

34.$1,000 will get you a 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom townhouse in Grand Forks, North Dakota. The 1,008 sq. ft. duplex townhouse has a large backyard and detached garage.
North Dakota's median rent has increased 26.72% from 2000 to 2020.
35.Cambridge, Ohio, offers this 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom apartment. The 1,350 sq. ft. home has a separate office space, laundry area, and even a game room.
Ohio has seen a very minor increase in median rent, at just over 2.5% from 2000 to 2020.
36.In Guthrie, Oklahoma, there's this 950 sq. ft. 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom home for rent. It's recently remodeled with hardwood floors and is move-in ready. There's a fenced-in backyard with a large yard and parking.
Oklahoma's median rent has increased by15.91% from 2000 to 2020.
37.In Lebanon, Oregon, you can get a 500 sq. ft. 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom apartment.
Oregonians have seen the average rent rise 24.11% from 2000 to 2020.
38.$1,000 is all that's standing between you and a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom home for rent in Martinsburg, Pennsylvania. The tenant pays all utilities, but there's parking and a garage to sweeten the deal on the 1,600+ sq. ft. place.
Pennsylvania's average rent increased 16.30% from 2000 to 2020.
39.Rhode Island has slim pickings for budget renters. There is this 500 sq. ft 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom home in Pawtucket.
The median rent in Rhode Island increased 22.47% from 2000 to 2020.
40.For just under $1,000, you can get a 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom 800 sq. ft. home for rent in Greenville, South Carolina.
Rhode Island's average rent increased 17.39% from 2000 to 2020.
41.This Letcher, South Dakota (a town of just 200 people) home is 840 sq. ft. with 1 bedroom and 1 bathroom on 3 acres. It has walk-in closets, a barn, and a mudroom with washer/dryer.
South Dakota has seen its average price of rent increase by17.22% from 2000 to 2020.
42.This 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom 800 sq. ft. apartment in Nashville, Tennessee, currently goes for $1,000.
From 2000 to 2020, the median rent in Tennessee increased by 16.24%.
43.Lubbock, Texas has this 1,200 sq. ft. 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom home with plenty of new fixings throughout. It's in a gated community with more amenities.
In Texas, the median rent has increased 23.42% from 2000 to 2020.
44.In Provo, Utah, a studio with 1 bathroom with a fireplace and stainless-steel kitchen appliances is $1,000. There are additional fees for utilities and pets, but its still pretty solid all things considered.
Utah's average rent increased 19.43% from 2000 to 2020.
45.This Windsor, Vermont home has a second-floor 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom apartment. It has some good storage and heat, hot water, and trash/recycling is included.
In Vermont, the average rent prices increased 15.07% from 2000 to 2020.
46.Richmond, Virginia has a 760 sq. ft. 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom single-family home for $1,000.
Median rent has risen over 25% in Virginia from 2000 to 2020.
47.Washington State has this lovely 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom 1,080 sq. ft. apartment for rent in Sammamish, and in exchange for this low rate, the tenant is expected to have experience with and be willing to do part-time work in leasing, managing, or maintenance.
Washington's average rent has increased 33.10% from 2000 to 2020.
48.This 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom apartment in Clarksburg, West Virginia is a promising space with storage and is conveniently located.
The median rent in West Virginia increased 17.73% from 2000 to 2020.
49.This Milwaukee, Wisconsin home apartment has some seriously gorgeous lighting. It's 1,325 sq. ft. with 4 bedrooms and 1 bathroom.
Wisconsin has experienced an average rent increase of just 4.26% from 2000 to 2020.
50.Mills, Wyoming has a 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom home for rent that's 950 sq. ft., plus a small fenced-in yard.
The median rent in Wyoming increased 22.14% from 2000 to 2020
51.And last but certainly not least, there's Washington, DC. You can get a 550 sq. ft. apartment with 1 bedroom and 1 bathroom.
The median rent in DC increased drastically, 68.43% from 2000 to 2020.
