Trucking company seeks incentives
Apr. 18—HIGH POINT — The business seeking financial assistance from the city for a possible downtown expansion has been identified as RUD Fleet Corp.
The company, which has a presence in High Point at 1200 Eastchester Drive, handles licensing, title work and other services related to commercial vehicles that it delivers to clients.
RUD Fleet is asking the city for up to $320,000 in cash grant incentives to assist with a possible downtown expansion at 209 N. Main St.
Its request was first reported by The High Point Enterprise on April 9, but the city did not identify the company until this week.
"They are a current High Point company that is growing and needs additional space," said Sandy Dunbeck, interim director of the High Point Economic Development Corp. "They are looking at multiple spaces throughout the region but have a high level of interest in 209 N. Main."
The company is considering leasing the 13,500-square-foot, two-story building, which has been vacant since Huffman Koos, a retail furniture store, went out of business there about five years ago.
"They propose to move 10 jobs that they currently have to the facility and create 20 additional new jobs over the next four years, with an average wage of $44,000," Dunbeck said.
If the company chooses the site, $100,000 worth of building improvements would be made prior to its moving in, with an additional $150,000 in upfits planned to convert the property from showroom to office space, Dunbeck said.
The City Council has scheduled a public hearing on the incentives Monday.
