Truck rolls on Sabattus Street in Lewiston

Jul. 28—LEWISTON — Both drivers escaped with minor injuries Wednesday afternoon after two pickup trucks collided on Sabattus Street, sending one flipping into a yard.

The 4:20 p.m. wreck, across the street from Bourque's Market, brought police fire and rescue crews from all directions.

According to a witness, a man driving a gray Ford F-150 was pulling onto Sabattus Street from either a parking lot or a side street when his truck collided with another pickup truck headed east on Sabattus Street.

The F-150 flipped, the witness said, and rolled into the front yard of a three-story apartment house at 641 Sabattus St., a tool box, animal cages and ladders sailing out of the truck's bed. The truck came to rest on its side.

As gasoline poured from the underside of the F-150, fire fighters scrambled to free the driver from the overturned truck. The driver, a local man in his 20s, was conscious, alert and able to walk on his own once he was out of the truck.

He was later taken by ambulance to Central Maine Medical Center.

The driver of the second truck, a Ford pickup owned by Spencer Group Paving, of Turner, did not appear seriously injured, although the front end of his vehicle was badly damaged in the wreck.

The identities of the drivers were not available.

Police and fire crews shut down a portion of Sabattus Street along with at least one nearby side street. Sabattus Street was limited to one lane of travel while the scene was being cleared and police began their investigation.
