Truck kills El Paso woman picking up fallen cellphone on Shadow Mountain Drive

A woman who stopped to grab a cellphone that had fallen while crossing a street was fatally struck by a pickup in West El Paso, police said.

Celina Coria, 37, died at University Medical Center of El Paso after being hit by a truck Monday night on Shadow Mountain Drive near North Mesa Street, police said.

At 9:42 p.m., Coria and her adult son were walking across Shadow Mountain when her son dropped his cellphone on the street. Coria returned to get the phone when she was hit by a 2001 GMC Sierra driven by Jesus Gomez, 22, heading westbound as the road curves, police said.

Coria was taken to UMC, where she died of her injuries. The pedestrian and driver were both residents of the West Side.

The collision was the 27th traffic-related death in El Paso this year, compared with 25 at the same time last year, according to Police Department numbers.
