Troopers say 14-year-old driver seriously injured after Mustang crashes near Bucyrus

A 14-year-old was in serious condition at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus after troopers say a car the youth was driving crashed in Bucyrus Township on Tuesday night.

According to a release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol Marion Post, the crash occurred on Ohio 4 in Bucyrus Township in Crawford County around 9:05 p.m.

Per the release, the 14-year-old was driving a 2020 Ford Mustang northbound on Ohio 4 while another driver, Samantha Burchett, 23, who was in a 2012 Hyundai Sonata, was also traveling northbound on the road. The juvenile driver of the Mustang attempted to overtake the Hyundai, but instead struck the other car, traveled off to the east side of the road, hit a traffic sign, ran through a ditch and eventually collided with a tree before the car overturned.

Troopers also said they were involved in two pursuits of the Ford Mustang before the crash. Each of the pursuits was called off due to "dangerous speeds and erratic driving."

While Burchett did not sustain any injuries as a result from the crash, the 14-year-old driver was rushed to Avita Health System-Bucyrus Hospital by the Bucyrus Fire Department EMS and later flown to Nationwide Children's Hospital by Medflight. Lt. Lance Shearer of the Marion post said the juvenile is still recovering from injuries in the hospital.

This crash remained under investigation as of Wednesday morning.

In addition to the patrol and Bucyrus EMS, the Crawford County Sheriff's Office, Bucyrus Township Fire Department, Dallas Township Fire Department and Ed's 24-Hour Service all assisted on the scene of the crash.
