Trial in fatal Suffield Township stabbing delayed until February

The upcoming trial of a Suffield Township man charged in the fatal stabbing of his wife on Valentine's Day will be delayed by more than four months.

The Oct. 21 trial of Donald Ray Small Jr., 60, has been continued until Feb. 28, according to Portage County Court of Common Pleas records. Small signed a waiver of his right to a speedy trial on Sept. 19.

Small is accused of fatally stabbing his wife, Barbara Ann Small, 55, at their Winterhaven Drive home this past Feb. 14. The Portage County Sheriff's Office said Small was hospitalized immediately afterward with a self-inflicted knife injury.

A grand jury indicted Small on two counts each of unclassified felony murder and second-degree felony assault. One of the murder counts includes a specification that the alleged offense was in conjunction with an assault; one of the assault charges includes a specification that it was with a knife, a "deadly weapon." He is being held in Portage County Jail on a $1 million bond.
