Transforming the Concept of Prefabricated Houses with Personalized Design and Creative Collaboration: the evoDOMUS Story

BERLIN, GERMANY / ACCESSWIRE / January 9, 2023 / The general idea of prefabricated houses is that they are of shoddy manufacture and cookie cutter design. evoDOMUS, with CEO and co-founder Alexander Kolbe, turns this notion on its head with their flair for design, cost-consciousness and experienced problem-solving skills. evoDOMUS has received glowing reviews from highly demanding clients based in exclusive locations like Martha's Vineyard and the Hamptons. Components of the homes that they create might be prefabricated, but the company has not designed a single house without visiting the site and taking into account the setting, neighborhood and the topical elements. He designs the houses after extensive conversations with his clients and has developed a reputation in the industry for his unique approach to design and sustainability.

Born in Berlin, Alexander qualified as an architect from Technische Universitat in Berlin. Inspired by his close proximity to Bauhaus inspired buildings, he developed a love for modern design, with its clean lines and generous proportions.

Alexander Kolbe started his career as an architect in Germany and England where the prefabricated homes were fashioned from factory made panels, loaded onto trucks and brought to the construction site. But this model did not work so well in the United States, as only the exterior walls and ceiling panels could be made in this manner, with the rest of the house requiring onsite construction. This made evoDOMUS decide to switch to the use of modular units so that the drywall, electrical, plumbing and other finishes could also be completed in a factory. After investigating various manufacturing options, evoDOMUS has maintained a longstanding collaboration with a factory that met their exacting standards for thicker drywall, high quality mineral wool insulation, attentive air-sealing and hydrophobic Zip System sheathing.

At evoDOMUS, the focus is on designing homes in a modern, European contemporary style that leave a reduced impact on the environment through their incorporation of elements such as photovoltaic solar panels for the generation of electricity. In general, an effort is made to install adequate solar panels on the roof to ensure that the net carbon footprint is zero, or as close to zero as possible. The houses would still be connected to the common electrical grid for emergency situations, otherwise batteries which have a huge environmental footprint would need to be installed. The use of a large solar array ensures that on days, when there is a surplus of electricity, it is fed back into the grid to offset the energy consumption on the days that are not sunny enough.

Said Alexander Kolbe, "We do try and persuade clients to refrain from installing any devices that use fossil fuel. So far we have managed to accomplish this with very rare exceptions. When it comes to heating and cooling equipment, we use only heat pump technology as it can be used for both heating and cooling."

Another key differentiator is that architects who have such a passion for designing modern contemporary homes are quite rare. As a European trained architect who is a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), Alexander's modern designs have earned him accolades from his clients and the Build 2021 Architecture Awards.

Concluded Alexander, "evoDOMUS is a client centered provider of sustainable and energy efficient homes. We are meticulous about the design process and the quality of the materials we use. For example, we import triple glazed windows from Germany, because of their better thermal performance. Our walls and roofs are super insulated and far exceed code requirements. We work closely with the client and their local contractor to ensure that the end product is just as we envisioned it. Ultimately, our goal is to provide our clients with houses that are homes in every sense - a solid, warm place that brings to life their concept of a dream home."
