Track and field: Pole vaulters Lily, Luke Beattie follow athletic lead of parents

WARWICK – Many young athletes have, say, a basketball hoop in their driveway, or a patch of yard where they throw the baseball or football.

Not everyone has a pole vault jumping pit in their backyard, though.

Welcome to the Beattie family. Parents Luke and Melanie Beattie were accomplished athletes in their high school days at Warwick, and their children, Lily and Luke, are following in their footsteps.

Lily is a sophomore and Luke is an eighth-grader – headed into the weekend, both had vaulted 12 feet, 1 inch outdoors this season, ranking Lily No. 5 among the girls in the state and Luke at No. 33 among the boys. They each lead the state in their respective classes.

“They’re living up to that last name,’’ said Tim St. Lawrence, who coached the parents in high school and the kids on the club level. “They’re coming from great DNA. They have tremendous ability and they like to train – very much like Richie did – and that combination is lethal.’’

Rich Beattie was one of the top scholastic decathletes in the nation, establishing records on the local and state level, before competing at the University of Alabama. He was a multiple medal winner at the Empire State Games.

Lily insists that her father didn’t push her into track and field but she’s aware of his past accomplishments and naturally gravitated to the pole vault. Living a short distance from the Hudson Valley Flying Circus barn, Lily recalls giving pole vault a try at the end of fourth grade.

“I wanted to go one day and it kind of just went from there,’’ she said. “It was pretty fun. Maybe it was a little bit (following in her father’s footsteps) but I was more curious to see what I could do.’’

St. Lawrence said Rich Beattie still lends a hand with young vaulters. As it turns out, St. Lawrence had some extra landing pit mats at the barn so the Beatties set up a pole vault area at their home, complete with concrete runway. The barn closes for a month over the summer, and Lily says she likes to train year-round so it only made sense.

Pole vaulting is very technical, from properly carrying the pole, the runway sprint, making a proper plant, riding the bend and properly contorting the body to get up and over the bar. It’s executing the series of phases that appeals to Lily.

“I really like to see everything come together,’’ Lily said, “because it really takes a lot of work to get everything to where it needs to be. Something's usually always off and you just got to fix it, and when it happens, it's good.’’

On a cool, cloudy Friday afternoon at Warwick, Lily Beattie won the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association girls pole vault title, at 11 feet, 7 inches. She had a recent near-miss at 12-3 and her hopes are to reach 12-6 by nationals in four weeks' time.

“I believe I am like right there,’’ she said. “I know I can jump higher and I feel that it’s coming … I just have to do it in the meet.’’

St. Lawrence admits he has held Lily back a bit, not wanting her to burn out. He said he’s projecting her to exceed 13-6, or perhaps reach 14 feet, by the time she graduates in 2024.

“She’s a big, strong girl, and she’ll do anything I ask so I’ve got to temper my teaching with her,’’ he said. “I’ve got to take it slow. I want her to have her best senior year.’’

Lily Beattie also placed third in the 400 hurdles in Saturday’s competition held at Goshen.

As for her younger brother, Luke broke the indoor state record for eighth-graders. On Saturday at Goshen, he set a new personal best at 13 feet, finishing second by tie-breaker – that moved Luke up to 14th overall in the state.

His body is still maturing “so he’s just coming into his own,’’ St. Lawrence said. “He’s a tough kid, too. He could pick up big poles. He’s not afraid. He’s got that dynamic.’’
