Bay County, Mich. 8, Hagerstown 2

In a rematch of an opening-round game, Bay County steadily pulled away and eliminated Hagerstown from the World Series at Washington, Pa.

Bay County took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by Jaxon Jenkins.

In the second, RBI singles by Dawson Lavender and Aiden Revette extended Bay County's lead to 3-0.

Jeremiah Hull's RBI single in the bottom of the second cut Hagerstown's deficit to 3-1.

Jack Wetters' RBI double gave Bay County a 4-1 lead in the third.

Bay County opened the game up with a three-run fifth. After a pair of singles, two runs scored on an error and Wetters made it 7-1 with a sacrifice fly.

Jenkins' RBI double in the sixth gave Bay County an 8-1 lead.

An error, two walks and Hull's RBI fielder's choice groundout cut Hagerstown's deficit to 8-2 in the bottom of the sixth.

Bay County finished with 12 hits — Benjamin Briggs went 3-for-3 and Revette and Jenkins added two each — while Hagerstown was held to five. Lavender got the win for Bay County, allowing one earned run on four hits and three walks while striking out six over five innings.

Saturday, Aug. 13

Johnstown, Pa. 13, Hagerstown 12 (8 innings)

Hagerstown rallied from a 7-1 deficit in the sixth inning and a 12-7 deficit in the seventh to tie the game twice and force an extra inning, but Grady Clark's RBI single gave Johnstown a walk-off victory in a winners' bracket game.

Hagerstown took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Ben Sattazahn was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a single by Brooks Norris.

Johnstown took control by scoring twice in the bottom of the first inning, twice more in the second and three times in the third for a 7-1 lead. Charlie Manzi hit an RBI double and scored on an error in the bottom of the first. A walk, an error and a sacrifice fly by Manzi led to the runs in the second. Ethan Shank hit a two-run single and Johnstown added another run on a double steal in the third.

Brock Bryson and Drew Irons held Hagerstown at bay through the first five innings. Bryson pitched the first two innings, allowing one earned run on one hit and one walk while striking out three. Irons allowed one hit over three scoreless innings, striking out three.

But Hagerstown tagged Brady Gartner for six runs — five earned — in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 7. Rylan Swartz, Julius Rowe and Jaren Wade hit singles to start the inning and score the first run. Bryce Davidson's RBI groundout cut the deficit to 7-3. With two outs, Hunter Benedict drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 7-4. After another walk, Norris hit a two-run single to make it 7-6, and Cooper Starkey added an RBI single for the tie.

Johnstown answered right back. Dante LaRocco hit a one-out single, stole second and scored when Manzi reached on an error. Brock Bryson followed with a two-run home run for a 10-7 lead. Johnstown added two more runs on a hit batter, a stolen base, a passed ball, a wild pitch that allowed a run, a walk, a double by Brennan Lohr and a steal of home.

With one out in the seventh and facing Manzi, Hagerstown loaded the bases on three straight walks and Sattazahn and Jackson Riser each hit an RBI single to cut the lead to 12-9 and a two-run error made it 12-11. With two outs, Rowe singled to tie the game at 12.

Shawn Higgins worked out of a two-on, one-out jam in the bottom of the seventh with a pair of strikeouts to force extra innings, before surrendering the winning run in the bottom of the eighth. He struck out three in his two innings.

With one out in the top of the eighth, Jeremiah Hull singled and Benedict was hit by a pitch. With two outs, Riser walked to load the bases, but a groundout ended Hagerstown's threat.

Swartz started and pitched 4 2/3 innings for Hagerstown, allowing four earned runs on four hits and five walks while striking out three. Riser had two hits and three RBIs, and Swartz and Rowe added two hits each.

Friday, Aug. 12

Hagerstown 6, Bay County, Mich., 5

Jackson Coulter struck out 11 over 4 2/3 innings, Ben Sattazahn had two hits and Hagerstown opened World Series play in Washington, Pa., by holding on for a victory.

Coulter allowed two unearned runs on three hits and four walks in his 96-pitch start. Ryan Swartz, who drove in two runs with a first-inning single that gave Hagerstown a 2-1 lead, pitched the seventh inning for the save, allowing one run on one hit and one walk.

Hagerstown broke open a 2-2 game with three runs in the third inning. Sattazahn led off with a double and took third and home on wild pitches. Brooks Norris walked and later scored when Cooper Starkey reached on an error. Coulter drove in Starkey with a single.

In the fourth inning, Jackson Riser reached base after striking out on a wild pitch. Julius Rowe entered as a pinch runner and later scored when Starkey reached on another strikeout and wild pitch, making it 6-2.

Bay County cut the lead to 6-4 on a walk, a single, an error and a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. A two-out RBI single by Jackson Andreski in the seventh made it 6-5, but Swartz got a fielder's choice groundout to end the game.

Little League Mid-Atlantic Regional

Monday, Aug. 8

Northwest (D.C.) 12, Conococheague 5

The Washington, D.C., champions scored all of their runs from the third through fifth innings, erasing an early four-run deficit and eliminating the Maryland state champions from the tournament in Bristol, Conn.

Conococheague took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Suko Mills and Grant Roth led off the game with walks and Chase Grove hit a one-out single to load the bases. With two outs, Mills scored on a wild pitch. Walks to Mason Talley and Avian Carosella forced in the second run.

Conococheague made it 3-0 in the second. Mills reached on a dropped third strike, Roth singled and the runners advanced on a wild pitch. Mills was out at home on a fielder's choice as Roth took third, and Roth scored on a double steal.

In the third, Talley was hit by a pitch, took second on a wild pitch, went to third on a single by Simon Hanna and scored on a passed ball to make it 4-0.

Luther Davis allowed one hit while striking out four over the first two innings, but the Conococheague starter ran into trouble in the bottom of the third. The first three Northwest hitters each singled to load the bases and consecutive walks forced home two runs. Carosella came on in relief and gave up a one-out walk, an RBI single by Jonny Rose that tied the game at 4, and two-out RBI singles by Aaron Saad and Grayson Liddle gave Northwest a 6-4 lead.

Northwest extended the lead to 8-4 in the fourth when Devin Trendl hit an RBI triple and scored on a wild pitch.

Conococheague scored a run in the fifth on Cohen Hoffman's walk, a wild pitch, Bryce Wright's sacrifice bunt and an error to cut the deficit to 8-5.

Northwest put the gave away with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Trendl and Elisha Knight sandwiched RBI singles around Teddy Young's two-run double.

Mills and Grove each finished with two hits for Conococheague.

Sunday, Aug. 7

Naamans, Del. 2, Conococheague 1

Even while getting no-hit, Maryland state champion Conococheague made things interesting in a loss to Delaware state champion Naamans, out of Wilmington, to open regional play in Bristol, Conn.

Ultimately, Zach Derbyshire scored on a wild pitch with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, sending Naamans into Tuesday's winners' bracket final against Pennsylvania champion Hollidaysburg.

Peter Hudson pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing one unearned run on four walks while striking out 11 for Naamans. He also had two hits — a triple and an RBI single in the third inning.

Conococheague tied the game at 1 in the top of the sixth. Suko Mills led off with a walk and took second when Bryce Wright laid down a bunt and was safe on an error. On a double steal, Mills took third while Wright was thrown out at second. With two outs, Mills scored on a passed ball.

Ian Rhea was sharp for Conococheague, allowing one earned run on three hits and one walk while striking out 10 over 5 1/3 innings.

PONY-14 East Zone

Saturday, Aug. 6

Hagerstown 14, High Point, N.C. 2

Another fast start launched Hagerstown to the East Zone championship and a berth in the PONY-14 World Series, starting Friday in Washington, Pa.

Hagerstown (6-0) will face Bay County, Mich., in the first round of the World Series on Friday at 5:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on AT&T SportsNet. Ten teams are divided into two five-team, double-elimination brackets, with the two winners meeting in the title game on Aug. 17.

This group of players also participated in the PONY-13 World Series in California last year.

"I'm really happy that they're going to get the chance to go to the 14s — that's probably as close as you can get to the Little League World Series as far as the pageantry and how they treat the boys," said Hagerstown manager Steve Berger.

Hagerstown will be making its 15th appearance in the PONY-14 World Series and its fourth since 2015. Its 15 appearances are the most by any team other than host Washington.

This is the first year that Hagerstown's PONY-13 and PONY-14 teams each reached the World Series. The PONY-13 team went 1-2 in its trip to California last month.

Hagerstown was dominant in the East Zone tournament, outscoring its three opponents 40-7 and outhitting them 34-3. In its six postseason games, Hagerstown has scored 82 runs and at least 10 in each contest.

"We just hit the ball," Berger said. "Everybody on the whole team, when they got their opportunity, they hit the ball hard — whether it fell in or not. That's all 14 kids."

Hagerstown scored five runs in the top of the first inning Saturday. Rylan Swartz hit an RBI single, Landon Trumpower drew a bases-loaded walk, Jackson Riser drove in a run with a groundout, Bryce Davidson scored on a passed ball and Shawn Higgins singled in the final run of the inning.

Brooks Norris hit an RBI single and scored on Cooper Starkey's sacrifice fly to make it 7-0 in the second inning.

Tournament host High Point scored two runs on two walks, a steal of home and an error in the bottom of the second.

Norris' sacrifice fly in the fourth inning gave Hagerstown an 8-2 lead. An RBI double by Davidson and an RBI groundout by Hunter Benedict in the fifth made it 10-2.

Hagerstown scored four runs in the seventh on an RBI single by Julius Rowe, a passed ball and a two-run error.

Jackson Coulter pitched the first six innings, allowing one earned run on two hits and two walks while striking out eight. Swartz struck out the side in the seventh. Benjamin Sattazahn went 3-for-4 and Norris had two hits and two RBIs.

Friday, Aug. 5

Hagerstown 16, Manchester, N.H. 5

Hagerstown scored six runs in the top of the first inning to take immediate control in the winners' bracket final.

Brooks Norris hit an RBI double, Cooper Starkey hit an RBI triple, Benjamin Sattazahn hit an RBI single and Bryce Davidson capped the first-inning rally with a two-run single for Hagerstown, which scored its other run in the inning on an error.

Hagerstown added three runs in the fourth inning for an 8-0 lead. Norris tripled and courtesy runner Jaren Wade scored on a balk. Starkey singled, stole second and scored on an error that allowed Rylan Swartz to reach base. Swartz scored the final run on a double steal.

Manchester scored twice in the bottom of the fourth without a hit, making the most of two walks on an RBI groundout and an error.

Hagerstown made it 16-2 with a seven-run fifth inning. Norris and Derek Norton each hit a two-run single and Landon Trumpower added an RBI single in the frame. The other two runs scored on an error.

Manchester scored its final three runs in the bottom of the fifth on two walks, a double steal, Brody Labbe's RBI double — which was the first hit given up by Hagerstown pitching in the tournament — and an error.

Brooks Norris got the win, pitching four hitless innings and allowing two unearned runs on four walks while striking out five. He finished 4-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs. Starkey, Sattazahn and Trumpower each had two hits.

Wednesday, Aug. 3

Hagerstown 10, Great Neck, Va. 0

Brooks Norris, Shawn Higgins and Jackson Coulter teamed up on a six-inning no-hitter with eight strikeouts, and Hagerstown opened East Zone play with a shutout of Great Neck.

Hagerstown's trio of pitchers worked around six walks and two errors, while the offense pounded out nine hits — four for extra bases — and scored in five of the six innings. Hagerstown put the game away with a three-run fifth and a four-run sixth to activate the 10-run rule.

Norris, the starting pitcher, struck out four and walked two over 2 2/3 innings. Higgins allowed two walks and struck out one over 1 1/3 innings. Coulter struck out three and walked two over the final two innings.

At the plate, Cooper Starkey went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and an RBI. Norris and Coulter each hit a double. Rylan Swartz had a hit and drove in two runs, and Benjamin Sattazahn added a hit and an RBI.

Conococheague 11, Fruitland 0

In his first game pitching for the Conococheague 10-12 All-Stars, Mason Talley couldn’t have shined much brighter.

The 11-year-old went the distance on the mound, firing a three-hit shutout as Conococheague toppled Fruitland in five innings in the state final at Perryville to advance to the Mid-Atlantic Region Tournament.

It’s Conococheague’s first Little League 10-12 state title since 2011 and its fourth overall.

“We have a pretty nice pitching staff, and I knew I had him sitting there and nobody knew about him,” Conococheague manager Jason Rhea said of Talley. “He was a no-brainer once we burned our top two, three guys. Once we couldn’t pitch them anymore, it was a no-doubter who was going to start in the state championship.

“We had a lot of confidence in him,” Rhea added. “I knew he was going to throw well, but I didn’t know he was going to throw a three-hit shutout. I knew he was going to pitch well and give us a chance to win, but he went above and beyond. He was dominant.”

The offense gave him more than enough support, scoring three runs in the top of the second, two in the third, three in the fourth and three in the fifth.

“Every kid on the team played very well,” Rhea said. “It was a team effort, and we got it done. I’ve got to tell you, man, I’ve never seen kids happier. They’re very excited.”

Suko Mills went 3-for-3 with a walk, two RBIs and three runs scored for Conococheague, while Luther Davis went 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

Also in the victory, Ian Rhea had two hits and two RBIs, Brycen Bachtell had two hits and two runs scored, Grant Roth drove in two runs and Avian Carosella added an RBI.

Conococheague finished 5-1 for the state tournament, including 2-1 against Fruitland.

Next up is the Mid-Atlantic Region Tournament in Bristol, Conn., where the Maryland state champions will open against Delaware on Aug. 7 at 1 p.m.

“We’re looking forward to it,” Jason Rhea said. “I don’t think these kids have any idea about the experience they’re about to have. But we adults and coaches know what they’re about to experience, and I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

Conococheague 10, Fruitland 5

Starting pitcher Ian Rhea helped his cause with two hits and three RBIs as Conococheague prevailed in the championship round, forcing a final game against Fruitland on Friday at 5:30 p.m. at Perryville.

On Tuesday, Fruitland defeated Conococheague 10-9 in the winners’ bracket final.

On Thursday, Conococheague scored six runs in the top of the second inning for a 7-2 lead. After Fruitland cut it to 7-5 in the third, Conococheague scored one in the fourth and two in the sixth.

Rhea earned the win, allowing five runs (three earned), five hits and a walk while striking out five in 5 1/3 innings. Suko Mills got the final two outs on the mound.

Mills also had two hits, including a double, and two runs scored. Chase Grove also had two hits, Avian Carosella had an RBI triple, Maddux Black also tripled, Brycen Bachtell had an RBI double, Grant Roth had an RBI and two runs scored and Luther Davis drove in a run.

Wednesday, July 27

Conococheague 5, Brunswick 4

Luther Davis pitched a complete game and drove in the game-winning run, Suko Mills had two hits and an RBI, and Conococheague defeated Brunswick in the elimination-bracket final to advance to the championship round at Perryville.

Down by a run, Conococheague scored twice in the top of the fifth inning to take a 5-4 lead, getting RBIs from Ian Rhea and Davis.

Tuesday, July 26

Fruitland 10, Conococheague 9

Fruitland advanced to the championship round with a wild victory in the winners’ bracket final at Perryville.

Conococheague trailed 7-0 before rallying for nine runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 9-7 lead. Fruitland answered with three in the bottom half for a walk-off win.

Conococheague sent 14 batters to the plate in the sixth, turning seven walks, two singles and two errors into nine runs.

Suko Mills, Grant Roth, Ian Rhea, Luther Davis, Mason Talley and Avian Carosella each drove in a run for Conococheague, which will play in the elimination-bracket final Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

Conococheague 8, Elkton 2

Luther Davis had two hits, including a double, and pitched 3 2/3 shutout innings as Conocheague advanced to Tuesday’s winners’ bracket final at Perryville.

Chase Grove and Avian Carosella each had two hits and an RBI in the victory, while Ian Rhea had a double and an RBI, Suko Mills hit a triple and Grant Roth, Isaac Long and Brycen Bachtell each drove in a run.

Conocheague scored three runs in the top of the second, one in the third, two in the fifth and two in the sixth for an 8-0 lead.

Saturday, July 23

Conococheague 9, Brunswick 3

Conococheague, the five-time reigning District 1 champion, rolled to a first-round win in the seven-team state tourney at Perryville.

Suko Mills and Chase Grove each had three hits, including a double, and an RBI, Isaac Long drove in two runs, and Avian Carosella added an RBI.

Conococheague scored one run in the top of the first inning, one in the fourth, two in the fifth and five in the sixth for a 9-0 lead.

Starter Ian Rhea earned the win on the mound, allowing three hits and a walk with three strikeouts in five shutout innings.

Berlin 7, Valley 2

Berlin defeated Valley for the second time in the tournament to capture the state title.

Valley trailed 6-0 before scoring two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Connor Bratburd led off with a single for Valley’s first hit of the game, Cole Bratburd drew a walk and Blake Custer hit a two-run double to center.

Wednesday, July 27

Valley 4, Brunswick 1

Derek Kline went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, Connor Bratburd had two hits and an RBI and Chris Benford was solid on the mound as Valley prevailed in the elimination-bracket final to advance to the championship round at Maugansville.

Benford allowed one run, three hits and four walks while striking out four in 6 2/3 innings.

Michael Wynkoop, Matthew Mallardi and Landon Boyer each had an RBI in the victory.

Valley will face Berlin at 6 p.m. Thursday, needing a win to force a winner-take-all final Friday at 6 p.m.

Tuesday, July 26

Berlin 5, Valley 3

In the winners’ bracket final, which took three hours and didn’t end until almost midnight at Maugansville, Berlin outlasted Valley to advance to the championship round.

Down two runs, Valley cut the score to 2-1 in the bottom of the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Ross Hill. After three straight walks in the third, Michael Wynkoop scored from third on a wild pitch to tie the game, 2-2.

Trailing 5-2 in the seventh, Valley tried to rally. Derek Kline led off with a double for the team’s first hit of the game, and Chris Benford followed with an RBI single to make it 5-3. After a strikeout, Matthew Mallardi drew his third walk of the night to bring the potential winning run to the plate, but the game ended on a double play.

Each team issued 11 walks in the game.

Sunday, July 24

Valley 19, Calvert 9

Derek Kline went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and four runs scored as Valley rolled to a five-inning victory in the winners’ bracket semifinals at Maugansville.

Matthew Mallardi had two hits, including a double, and three RBIs for Valley, while Cole Bratburd had two hits, including a double, two RBIs and three runs scored, Chris Benford had two hits and and five runs scored, Connor Bratburd drove in two runs and Michael Wynkoop, Aiden Miner and Ross Hill each added an RBI.

Valley received a first-round bye in the seven-team tourney, which began Saturday.

PONY-13 World Series

Sunday, July 24

Ramona (Calif.) 2, Hagerstown 0

Justin Jarrett hit a two-run single in the top of the fifth inning, and Jacob Parker pitched six shutout innings with 11 strikeouts as Ramona eliminated Hagerstown from the tournament in Modesto, Calif.

Hagerstown finished with four hits, including a double by Chase Diller.

Landon Myers took the loss, allowing two runs, three hits and four walks while striking out three in six innings.

Hagerstown, which competed in the PONY-13 World Series for the second straight year, finished 1-2 in the tourney with both losses coming against Ramona.

Saturday, July 23

Hagerstown 13, Bani (Dominican Republic) 5

Landon Myers and Trey Hamlin each had three RBIs as Hagerstown stayed alive in the eight-team tournament, defeating Bani in an elimination game in Modesto, Calif.

After Bani took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, Hagerstown scored five runs in the bottom half and six more in the second for an 11-3 advantage. Bani cut it to 11-5 in the third, and Hagerstown answered with two runs in the fourth.

Manny Brookens pitched six innings of relief to earn the win, allowing two runs (one earned), five hits and four walks while striking out three.

Andrew Weaver and Hamlin each had two hits, Luke Byrd and Myers each hit a two-run double, Cole Jesson also doubled and Chase Cosner added an RBI.

Friday, July 22

Ramona (Calif.) 3, Hagerstown 2

Aaron Gonzalez Bautista hit a two-out RBI single in the top of the ninth inning and Alex Wilson struck out the side in the bottom half as Ramona edged Hagerstown in a first-round game in Modesto, Calif.

Hagerstown went up 2-1 in the fourth. With runners on second and third and two outs, Zac Carpenter hit an RBI infield single to short, and an error on the play allowed another run to score.

Ramona tied the game 2-2 in the sixth.

Hagerstown finished with six hits, including two by Andrew Weaver.

On the mound for Hagerstown, starter Ryder Linn allowed two runs (one earned), five hits and two walks while striking out six in six innings. Weaver pitched the final three innings, allowing a run, two hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

Hagerstown is making its second straight appearance in the PONY-13 World Series.

Hagerstown 10, Ohio Prospects 7

Hagerstown prevailed in the championship in Boardman, Ohio, to advance to the East Zone tournament.

Brooks Norris had two doubles and an RBI, Cooper Starkey also had two hits and an RBI, Landon Trumpower had a double and two RBIs, Jackson Coulter drove in two runs and Hunter Benedict added an RBI.

Coulter was the winning pitcher, allowing six runs (all unearned), six hits and three walks while striking out seven in five innings.

Hagerstown trailed 6-5 through four innings, before scoring four in the top of the fifth and one in the seventh for a 10-6 lead.

The East Zone championship will be held Aug. 3-6 in High Point, N.C., with the winner advancing to the World Series.

Saturday, July 23

Hagerstown 12, Ohio Prospects 3

Brooks Norris went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs, and Bryce Davidson went 2-for-2 with a walk and drove in three runs as Hagerstown topped the Ohio Prospects in the winners’ bracket final in Boardman, Ohio.

Shawn Higgins pitched five innings of relief to earn the win, allowing one run, three hits and two walks while striking out five.

Also for Hagerstown, Rylan Swartz had two hits and two RBIs, Cooper Starkey drove in two runs, Higgins doubled, Landon Trumpower added an RBI and Julius Rowe drew three walks and scored two runs.

Hagerstown 19, Tri-T Boardman 5

Brooks Norris had two hits and three RBIs and pitched two perfect innings of shutout relief with five strikeouts as the Hagerstown 14U PONY All-Stars rolled to a five-inning victory in the first round of the four-team tournament in Boardman, Ohio.

Also for Hagerstown, Bryce Davidson had three hits and an RBI, Jackson Coulter had two hits and three RBIs, Cooper Starkey had two hits and two RBIs, and Shawn Higgins and Landon Trumpower each drove in two runs.

Hagerstown scored eight runs in the top of the first inning, one in the second, six in the third and four in the fourth.

La Plata 5, Funkstown 4

The Post 211 Skunks finished sixth in the state with the season-ending loss to La Plata at McCurdy Field in Frederick.

Funkstown (18-6) trailed 5-0 before scoring two runs in the bottom of the third and two more in the fifth. Seth Bivens kept Post 211 in the game, pitching five innings of shutout relief.

Dylan Moser had three hits and two runs scored for the Skunks, while Noland Genies had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs, and Dillon Smith added an RBI.

Saturday, July 23

Funkstown 5, Severna Park 1

Noland Genies shut down Severna Park on the mound and had two RBIs as the Post 211 Skunks stayed alive in the eight-team state tourney with an elimination-game victory at McCurdy Field in Frederick.

Genies allowed one run, four hits and two walks while striking out five in 6 2/3 innings.

Funkstown (18-5) went up 2-0 in the bottom of the third. Jacob Hill hit an RBI double and scored on a single by Dillon Smith.

The Skunks extended their lead to 4-0 in the fourth on a two-run double by Genies. They made it 5-0 in the fifth as Brian Schrodel stole third and scored on an error on the play.

Friday, July 22

Fort Cumberland 3, Funkstown 1

The Post 211 Skunks dropped their opening game of the tourney at McCurdy Field in Frederick.

Fort Cumberland went up 2-0 with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

Funkstown cut it to 2-1 in the top of the sixth as Isaac Grove led off with a single, advanced to second on an error and scored on a single by Noland Genies.

Fort Cumberland answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning.

Genies finished with two of Funkstown’s five hits.

Dillon Smith pitched a complete game for the Skunks, allowing three runs (one earned), six hits and two walks while striking out two.

Saturday, July 23

SFCMA (Conn.) 13, Valley 7

The Maryland state champs were eliminated from the tournament in Dix Hills, N.Y.

Connecticut led 4-3 after the first inning and 6-5 after the third before pulling away for good.

Luke Scott went 3-for-4 with a home run, double and three RBIs for Valley, which earned the region berth by winning the first state title in its league’s history.

Also for Valley, Jack Regan had two hits, including a homer, and two RBIs, Gavin Blumenauer had two hits, and Logan Blumenauer and Michael Feight each doubled.

Friday, July 22

Sudbury (Mass.) 11, Valley 0

Liam Gregg pitched a one-hitter with 17 strikeouts as the Massachusetts state champions shut down Valley in six innings in the tournament opener in Dix Hills, N.Y.

Sudbury scored one run in the first inning, four in the second, two in the fifth and four in the sixth. Five of their runs were unearned as they capitalized on five Valley errors.

Luke Scott had the lone hit for Valley — a first-inning single to right field.
