Raptors' Norman Powell leaves game against Pistons late with apparent shoulder injury
The Toronto Raptors’ Wednesday night contest against the Detroit Pistons at Little Caesars Arena resulted in a second casualty.
After Marc Gasol had to leave the game in the first quarter with a left hamstring strain, Norman Powell did the same late in the fourth with what appeared to be a shoulder injury.
The 26-year-old was in considerable pain after running into an opponent and falling to the floor.
According to Sportsnet’s Eric Smith, he was struggling with the same shoulder that forced him to miss 21 games last season due to injury. That specific injury was a subluxation of his left shoulder, per Blake Murphy of The Athletic.
At the time of his exit, Powell had nine points, three assists and three rebounds. Coming into the contest, he had scored at least 22 points in three straight games.
The Raptors held on to win the game 112-99 to improve to 19-8 this season.
Powell was seen after the game with his shoulder in a sling, according to Ryan Wolstat of Postmedia. Both he and Gasol will undergo further testing on Thursday.
This Toronto squad watching two key players go down due to injury in the same game is nothing new this season, though. Both Kyle Lowry and Serge Ibaka missed time after sustaining ailments in a clash with the New Orleans Pelicans on Nov. 8.
Lowry proceeded to miss 11 games with a fractured left thumb, while Ibaka was sidelined until Dec. 1 with an ankle injury.
