Maple Leafs re-sign Justin Holl to three-year extension

The Toronto Maple Leafs have found a good one in Justin Holl.

After being a healthy scratch for the majority of last season, the 27-year-old defenceman has been a revelation throughout the first half of the 2019-20 campaign. For his efforts, he has been rewarded with a three-year, $6 million contract extension, the team announced on Tuesday.

Through 38 games this season, Holl has a goal and 10 assists for 11 points. Most impressively, he is currently second on the team with a plus-11 rating despite regularly being tasked with shutting down some of the league’s top offensive players.

During the 2017-18 season, Holl became the first Maple Leaf and sixth NHL defenceman in history to score a goal in each of his first two NHL games.

Currently in the final season of a two-year, $1.35 million contract, he would have become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. However, now that he’s inked this deal, he joins only Morgan Rielly on the list of current defencemen playing for the Maple Leafs that are signed beyond this season.
