Top Somerset County XC, golf, tennis soccer and volleyball performers for Oct. 3-6

Athlete of the Week

North Star junior quarterback Connor Yoder was voted Somerset County Football Athlete of the Week. North Star sophomore volleyball player Suzy Walker was selected Female Athlete of the Week while Berlin Brothersvalley freshman soccer player Logan Glessner was chosen Male Athlete of the Week for their efforts Sept. 26-30.

Yoder completed 11 of 25 passes for 257 yards and four touchdowns in North Star's 41-0 victory over Meyersdale. He rushed for 58 yards and a score. Yoder picked off a pass and recovered a fumble.

In three match wins, Walker recorded 29 total kills.

Meanwhile, Glessner scored the lone goal of the soccer match in a 1-0 victory over Windber.

Boys soccer

Conemaugh Township 9, Forest Hills 3: In Davidsville, Conemaugh Township used a 5-goal performance from Jackson Sotosky to defeat Forest Hills. Dillon Defibaugh had two goals while Austin Elliott and Declan Mainhart each provided a goal for Conemaugh Township.

Windber 2, Forbes Road 0: In Windber, Cayden Thompson and Derek Prince each netted a goal to lead the Ramblers past the Cardinals. Bryson Costa pitched the shutout.

Girls soccer

Windber 6, Berlin Brothersvalley 1: In Berlin, Riley Brubaker tallied two goals and two assists as the Ramblers bested the Mountaineers. Anna Steinbeck recorded a hat trick while Mariah Andrews contributed a goal and two assists for Windber.

Gracie Sechler netted a goal for Berlin.

North Star 2, Greater Johnstown 0: In Boswell, Molly Gontis and Lyla Raupach each recorded a goal and an assist to propel the Cougars past the Trojans. Abby Barnick pitched the shutout in net.

Bedford 2, Somerset 0: In Bedford the Golden Eagles were blanked by the Bisons. Ava Sipes and Grace Sarver scored for Bedford.

Tennis

District 5 Class 2A Championship

Bedford 4, Somerset 1: The Golden Eagles' season came to a close at the hands of the Bisons in the D5 title match. Senior Mia Rosman picked up the lone win for Somerset, which finished the season 13-5.

Volleyball

Berlin Brothersvalley 3, Bishop Walsh 0: In Berlin, Regan Lauer delivered seven aces and seven assists as the Mountaineers swept the Spartans 25-13, 25-13, 25-11. Lana Fairman tallied eight aces while Lynndee Ickes contributed nine kills for Berlin.

Conemaugh Township 3, Conemaugh Valley 0: In East Taylor Township, Alison Matera provided 30 assists as Conemaugh Township bested Conemaugh Valley 25-13, 25-6, 25-21. Hannah Swank tallied 12 kills and six blocks while Kendra Huber and Hannah Sodano added eight kills apiece for Conemaugh Township.

Somerset 3, Westmont Hilltop 0: In Somerset, Shandi Walker recorded six kills, three blocks and four digs as the Golden Eagles topped the Hilltoppers 26-24, 25-23, 25-17. Gracie Bowers provided 34 assists and six digs. Shawna Walker had 14 kills and three blocks. Sydney Rush contributed seven kills and four aces while Olivia Svonavec added seven kills for Somerset.

Wednesday

Cross country

The Somerset boys fell to Bedford 18-43, Penn Cambria 25-30 and Windber 21-37. Windber's Joe McKelvey (17:08) and Garrett Page (17:24) finished first and second, respectively. Jared Walker placed seventh with his season-best time of 19:24 for Somerset.

Meanwhile, the Somerset girls posted wins against Penn Cambria 23-32 and Windber 25-30 but fell to Bedford 22-33. Windber's Cecilia Bean finished sixth in 22:21. Brooke Morocco was the top Golden Eagle finisher, taking fifth in 22:00.

Boys soccer

Rockwood 4, Conemaugh Township 3: In Davidsville, Davis Bruening netted two goals while Max Trimpey and Davide Cavecchia each tallied a goal as the Rockets edged Conemaugh Township.

Max Malicki provided two goals while Jackson Sotosky added a tally for Conemaugh Township.

North Star 2, Berlin Brothersvalley 1: In Berlin, Johnathan Scott tallied two goals to lead the Cougars past the Mountaineers. Parker Scherer and Jason Wiencek each had an assist.

Caden Montgomery scored for Berlin.

Bedford 2, Somerset 0: In Somerset, the Golden Eagles were blanked by the rival Bisons. Layne Richardson and Kyler Weyant scored for Bedford.

Girls soccer

Conemaugh Township 6, Rockwood 3: In Davidsville, Izzy Slezak recorded four goals and an assist while Ashlyn Fetterman chipped in two goals and two assists as Conemaugh Township doubled up the Rockets.

Finnleigh Gould contributed a goal and two assists while Ally Harrold and Mollie Wheatley each netted a goal for Rockwood.

Tennis

District 5 Class 2A semifinals

Somerset 5, Chestnut Ridge 0: In Somerset, the No. 2 seeded Golden Eagles routed the No. 3 Lions. Mia Rosman, Violet Lopaze and Sarah Jacobs picked up singles victories. Corrine Johnston and Anna Harris as well as the team of Nevaeh Upton and Megan Barron earned doubles wins.

Volleyball

North Star 3, Greater Johnstown 2: In Johnstown, Anna Grandas produced 16 assists and seven aces as the Cougars edged the Trojans 25-16, 21-25, 21-25, 25-19, 16-14. Suzy Walker contributed 10 kills and three aces while Breanna Nash added 11 assists and four aces.

Shade 3, Northern Bedford 1: In Loysburg, Jenna Muha pounded down 37 kills to go along with 10 blocks as Shade bested Northern Bedford 25-20, 25-18, 20-25, 26-24. Jadeyn Gross provided 27 kills. Kori Boozer tallied 24 digs while Deborah Bozovich added 12 kills and six blocks for Shade.

Golf

Conemaugh Township sophomore Alex Boring shot an 86 to win the District 5 Class 2A girls' championship at Iron Masters Country Club. Teammate Jack Ankeny fired a 3-over 75 to finish runner-up in the boys' competition. Both golfers advance to the state championships at Penn State University's Blue Course on Oct. 17 and 18.

Boys soccer

Windber 11, Southern Fulton 0: In Windber, Jacob Hill tallied three goals and three assists as the Ramblers romped Southern Fulton. Damian Miller had two goals and an assist. Cayden Thompson recorded a goal and two assists. Derek Prince contributed a goal and five assists while Jacob Butler contributed a goal and an assist. Bryson Costa pitched the shutout.

Girls soccer

Conemaugh Township 9, North Star 0: In Ferrellton, Ashlyn Fetterman recorded a hat trick while Izzy Slezak added two goals as Conemaugh Township blanked the Cougars.

Forest Hills 4, Somerset 3: In Somerset, Willa Sharbaugh netted two goals in the Golden Eagles' setback to the Rangers. Kamryn Ross tallied a goal and an assist while Josie Steele contributed two assists for Somerset.

Windber 11, Southern Fulton 0: In Windber, Anna Steinbeck produced four goals and four assists while Mariah Andrews contributed three goals and three assists as the Ramblers throttled Southern Fulton. Kaylee Dowdell added a goal and an assist. Lexie James recorded the shutout.

Volleyball

Somerset 3, Bishop McCort 0: In Johnstown, Shawna Walker delivered 16 kills, nine aces and three blocks as the Golden Eagles took care of the Crushers 25-15, 25-19, 27-25. Shandi Walker contributed six kills and six digs while Gracie Bowers dished out 33 assists. Olivia Svonavec added four aces for Somerset.

Conemaugh Township 3, Meyersdale 0: In Meyersdale, Hannah Swank tallied 13 kills, four blocks, 10 digs and five aces as Conemaugh Township bested the Red Raiders 25-16, 25-14, 25-12. Kendra Huber contributed seven kills and three blocks while Hannah Sodano added seven kills. Alison Matera dished out 28 assists for Conemaugh Township.

Grace Hersh had three kills, three digs, two blocks and an ace while Emily Broadwater added 10 digs for Meyersdale.

North Star 3, Rockwood 1: In Boswell, Anna Grandas recorded 17 assists and five kills as the Cougars downed the Rockets 24-26, 25-12, 25-14, 25-14. Kora Warta delivered 10 kills while Suzy Walker provided 11 kills and three aces for North Star.

Shade 3, Conemaugh Valley 0: In Shanksville, Jenna Muha recorded 17 kills and five blocks as the Panthers cruised past the Blue Jays 25-7, 25-12, 25-19. Kori Boozer tallied 17 digs. Jadeyn Gross dished out 15 assists while Madalyn Rapsky added nine assists. Anna Deneen delivered six kills.

Berlin Brothersvalley 3, Windber 0: In Windber, Lynndee Ickes produced 11 kills while Jenny Countryman added seven kills as the Mountaineers defeated the Ramblers 25-21, 25-14, 25-12. Regan Lauer dished out 15 assists for Berlin.

Somerset 2, Forest Hills 1: In Sidman, Logan Baker netted two goals as the Golden Eagles edged the Rangers. Liam Egal and Tanner Wassilchalk each had an assist.

Windber 2, Northern Cambria 0: In Windber, Cayden Thompson recorded a goal and an assist as the Ramblers blanked the Colts. Jake Hill and Steven Campitell each had an assist while Bryson Costa pitched the shutout.

Girls soccer

Altoona 4, Somerset 2: In Altoona, Willa Sharbaugh netted two goals and Josie Steele added an assist in a setback to the Lions.

Tennis

Somerset senior Mia Rosman finished runner-up at the District 5 Class 2A singles tournament in Bedford. She fell to Chestnut Ridge's Caylie Conlon 6-7, 7-6, 6-2.

Volleyball

Berlin Brothersvalley 3, Windber 0: In Berlin, Peyton Grenke tallied 10 aces to lead the Mountaineers past the Ramblers 25-17, 25-4, 25-9. Lynndee Ickes recorded eight kills while McKenna Broderick added three kills for Berlin.

Somerset 3, North Star 1: In Boswell, Shawna Walker provided 15 kills, nine aces and three blocks as the Golden Eagles bested the Cougars 25-14, 25-14, 17-25, 25-10. Shandi Walker delivered 12 kills and seven digs. Olivia Svonavec chipped in 10 kills while Gracie Bowers dished out 33 assists to go along with six digs for Somerset.

Chloe Miller had four kills and two aces while Kora Warta added six kills for North Star.

Shade 3, Salisbury-Elk Lick 0: In Salisbury, Cameron Koback tallied 11 service points, including eight aces as the Panthers swept the Elks 25-3, 25-9, 25-16. Deborah Bozovich racked up 12 services points with eight aces while Sophia Mulcahy added five kills.

Conemaugh Township 3, United 1: In Armagh, Hannah Swank recorded 15 kills and Hannah Sodano contributed 12 kills as Conemaugh Township upended the Lions 25-12, 23-25, 25-14, 25-8. Ava Byer had 19 digs while Alison Matera provided 39 assists for Conemaugh Township.

Cross country

Somerset's Brooke Morocco placed fourth overall with a time of 23:34 while teammate Josie Smith took 13th in 24:17 at the Buffalo Wild Wings Invitational in Romney, West Virginia.

Girls soccer

Windber 7, McConnellsburg 0: In McConnellsburg, Riley Brubaker recorded three goals and two assists as the Ramblers blanked the Spartans. Anna Steinbeck tallied two goals and an assist while Kaylee Dowdell added a goal and an assist. Lexie James pitched the shutout.

Rockwood 5, Berlin Brothersvalley 0: In Rockwood, Mollie Wheatley provided two goals to lead the Rockets past the Mountaineers. Addie Barkman recorded a goal and an assist. Ally Harrold dished out two assists. Taylor Demchak made 10 saves in the win.
