Top Somerset County golf, soccer, tennis and volleyball performers for Sept. 26-29

Athlete of the Week

Conemaugh Township senior wide receiver Ethan Black was selected Football Athlete of the Week. Meyersdale senior volleyball player Amelia Kretchman was chosen Female Athlete of the Week while Somerset junior soccer player Logan Baker was voted Male Athlete of the Week for their efforts Sept. 19-23.

Black caught eight passes for 247 yards and four touchdowns in a 62-52 win at West Branch. He also had a 60-yard kickoff return for a TD.

In two matches, Kretchman delivered 25 kills and five blocks.

In two soccer wins, Baker delivered three total goals.

Thursday

Boys soccer

Conemaugh Township 4, Westmont Hilltop 0: In Davidsville, Caven Miller recorded two goals while Jon Allison and Dylan Giffin each added a goal as Conemaugh Township blanked the Hilltoppers. Declan Mainhart made eight saves to preserve the shutout.

Girls soccer

Somerset 5, Richland 0: In Somerset, Willa Sharbaugh recorded two goals and an assist to propel the Golden Eagles past the Rams. Josie Steele tallied a goal and an assist while Samantha Boden and Kylee Chabol each added a goal. Nora Richards pitched the shutout.

Tennis

Tyrone 5, Shanksville-Stonycreek 2: In Shanksville, Avery Custer earned a singles win and the team of Custer and Emma Ferko picked up a doubles win as the Vikings suffered a setback to the Golden Eagles.

Volleyball

North Star 3, Salisbury-Elk Lick 0: In Boswell, Suzy Walker recorded nine kills and three aces as the Cougars topped the Elks 25-10, 25-9, 25-8. Breanna Nash contributed eight assists and three kills.

Somerset 3, Penn Cambria 0: In Cresson, Shawna Walker produced 16 kills and 11 digs as the Golden Eagles swept the Panthers 25-19, 25-15, 25-18. Gracie Bowers tallied 36 assists. Shandi Walker contributed nine kills and 10 digs while Olivia Svonavec chipped in nine kills. Abby Ledney delivered four aces for Somerset.

Wednesday

Cross country

The Somerset boys defeated Bishop Carroll 26-33 and North Star 27-30 but suffered losses to Chestnut Ridge 19-38 and Bishop McCort 23-36 at Shawnee State Park. Jared Walker finished seventh in 20:15 for Somerset.

The Somerset girls came away with victories against Chestnut Ridge 21-40 and Bishop Carroll 15-50. Somerset's Brooke Morocco placed first in a time of 21:47 while teammate Bethann Walker placed third in 23:33.

Golf

Conemaugh Township's Jack Ankeny shot a 5-over par 77 to win the WestPAC Tournament Championship at Somerset Country Club. Conemaugh Township won the team title with a score of 342.

Boys soccer

Somerset 1, Richland 1 (2OT): In Richland Township, Liam Egal scored the lone goal for the Golden Eagles as they played to a draw with the Rams.

Berlin Brothersvalley 1, Northern Bedford 1 (20T): In Berlin, Hunter Probst tallied a goal as the Mountaineers and Panthers played to a tie.

Tennis

Tyrone 6, Shanksville-Stonycreek 1: In Tyrone, Avery Custer picked up a singles win as the Vikings fell to the Golden Eagles.

Volleyball

Conemaugh Township 3, Shade 0: In Davidsville, Hannah Swank recorded 13 kills, two blocks and 15 digs as Conemaugh Township handed the Panthers their first loss 25-13, 25-18, 25-16. Hannah Sodano tallied nine kills and 11 digs. Kendra Huber contributed six kills, two blocks and three aces while Alison Matera dished out 28 assists for Conemaugh Township.

Jenna Muha led Shade with 15 kills. Jadeyn Gross tallied 10 assists while Kori Boozer recorded 24 digs.

Tuesday

Cross country

In a girls race featuring runners from Johnstown Christian School, Meyersdale, Hyndman, Turkeyfoot Valley and Windber, Cecilia Bean took top honors for the Ramblers in a time of 22:58, setting a new course record. Lydia Hostetler of Johnstown Christian took second in 24:02 while Windber's Audrey Hart claimed third in 24:22.

In the boys race, Windber's Garrett Page set a new course record in 18:01. Meyersdale's Bryan Donitzen (20:18) and Levi Hersch (20:23) finished second and third, respectively.

Boys soccer

Windber 3, North Star 2 (OT): In Windber, William Minahan scored in overtime off a feed from Bailan Rugg to lift the Ramblers past the Cougars for their first win of the season. Cayden Thompson netted two goals while Derek Prince contributed two assists for Windber.

Parker Scherer and CJ Biery each tallied a goal for North Star.

Girls soccer

Conemaugh Township 4, Berlin Brothersvalley 1: In Berlin, Ashlyn Fetterman and Izzy Slezak each scored two goals to propel Conemaugh Township past the Mountaineers.

Gabby Hay scored for Berlin. Taylor Hillegass made 17 saves in the loss.

Somerset 8, Penn Cambria 1: In Cresson, Willa Sharbaugh tallied two goals and four assists as the Golden Eagles bested the Panthers. Maurah Shortt contributed three goals and two assists while Elise McCoy and Josie Steele each had a goal and an assist.

Volleyball

Somerset 3, Central 0: In Martinsburg, Gracie Bowers provided 32 assists and seven digs as the Golden Eagles tamed the Dragons 25-17, 25-17, 25-22. Shawna Walker delivered 13 kills and three blocks. Olivia Svonavec and Sydney Rush recorded 10 and eight kills, respectively, for Somerset.

North Star 3, Meyersdale 1: In Meyersdale, Anna Grandas recorded 10 kills and 10 assists as the Cougars upended the Red Raiders 25-22, 25-13, 11-25, 25-14. Breanna Nash dished out 12 assists while Dannyn Ashbrook contributed nine kills and 10 service points for North Star.

Golf

Shanksville-Stonycreek's Alec Thiele shot a 42 to earn medalist honors as the Vikings bested Conemaugh Valley 237-245 at Northwinds Golf Course.

Boys soccer

Conemaugh Township 2, Rockwood 1: In Rockwood, Jackson Sotosky scored the game-winning goal off a corner kick by Max Malicki with 10 seconds remaining in the contest to propel Conemaugh Township past the Rockets. Dylan Giffin added a goal for Conemaugh Township. Declan Mainhart recorded 10 saves.

Davis Bruening tallied a goal for Rockwood.

Berlin Brothersvalley 1, Windber 0: In Berlin, Logan Glessner scored the lone goal of the contest as the Mountaineers blanked the Ramblers. CJ Maxwell recorded an assist while Connor Montgomery and Matthew Miller combined for the shutout in goal.

Somerset 0, Penn Cambria 0 (2OT): In Somerset, the Golden Eagles played to a 0-0 draw. Somerset's Quintin Robison and Penn Cambria's Duncan Gongloff were unblemished in goal.

Girls soccer

Windber 17, Tussey Mountain 0: In Windber, Anna Steinbeck tallied five goals and an assist as the Ramblers routed the Titans. Angel James had four goals. Riley Brubaker contributed three goals and four assists while Mariah Andrews provided two goals and an assist. Lexie James earned the shutout.

Conemaugh Township 13, Chestnut Ridge 1: In Davidsville, Ashlyn Fetterman recorded a hat trick in Conemaugh Township's rout of the Lions.

Tennis

Shanksville-Stonycreek 5, Windber 0: In Windber, Avery Custer, Lindsay Frazier and Emma Ferko earned singles wins as the Vikings swept the Ramblers. Florence Hufford and Rayleigh Edwards along with the team of Dakota Weyant and Lilly Tooker captured doubles wins.

Somerset 4, Chestnut Ridge 1: In Somerset Violet Lopaze and Sarah Jacobs earned singles victories while the team of Corrine Johnston and Anna Harris as well as Nevaeh Upton and Chloe Miller picked up wins in doubles to lift the Golden Eagles past the Lions.

Volleyball

North Star 3, Greensburg Central Catholic 2: In Boswell, Suzy Walker recorded 14 kills and Anna Grandas chipped in eight as the Cougars earned a 14-25, 25-15, 20-25, 25-21, 15-11 victory over the Centurions. Breanna Nash dished out 18 assists for North Star.

Conemaugh Township 3, Cambria Heights 0: In Davidsville, Hannah Swank delivered 16 kills, four blocks and eight digs as Conemaugh Township topped the Highlanders 25-22, 25-13, 25-20. Hannah Sodano recorded seven kills and eight digs. Ava Byer added seven kills while Alison Matera provided 36 assists for Conemaugh Township.

Somerset 3, Central Cambria 0: In Somerset, Shawna Walker recorded 12 kills as the Golden Eagles bested the Red Devils 25-13, 25-14, 25-18. Olivia Svonavec produced seven kills, five blocks and four aces. Shandi Walker contributed seven kills, four blocks and six digs while Gracie Bowers tallied 30 assists for Somerset.

Southern Fulton 3, Meyersdale 1: In Meyersdale, Southern Fulton bested the Red Raiders 16-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-22. Zoe Hetz had 20 kills, four blocks and 16 digs for Meyersdale. Amelia Kretchman tallied nine kills and seven blocks while Amber Long dished out 15 assists.
