Top Somerset County basketball, rifle, swimming, wrestling performers for Feb. 3-9

Athlete of the Week

Conemaugh Township basketball player Ava Byer was selected Daily American Somerset County Female Athlete of the Week while Somerset wrestler Logan Baker earned Male Athlete of the Week honors for their efforts Jan. 30 to Feb. 3.

In two games, Byer combined for 15 points and 16 rebounds.

Meanwhile, Baker won by a 17-2 technical fall, helping the Golden Eagles edge the Bisons 37-36 in the District 5 Class 2A wrestling First Round.

Thursday

Boys basketball

Rockwood 62, Shanksville-Stonycreek 43: In Shanksville, Will Latuch poured in a game-high 21 points to send the Rockets past the Vikings.

Christian Schrock scored 17 points and Dalton Boden added 11 for Rockwood.

Logan McCall had 11 points and Ian Fox pulled down 10 rebounds for Shanksville.

Salisbury-Elk Lick 60, Meyersdale 49: In Meyersdale, Lance Jones dropped in 29 points and Lance Jones added 13 to lift the Elks over the Red Raiders.

Malachi Carr scored 23 points and Lance Aldinger added 15 for Meyersdale.

Girls basketball

Conemaugh Township 54, Turkeyfoot 15: In Davidsville, Mya Poznanski recorded 23 points and six rebounds as Conemaugh Township pummeled Turkeyfoot.

Ava Byer delivered 12 points and 10 rebounds for Conemaugh Township. Katie Wiley contributed eight points, five boards and five steals.

Maleigha Younkin led Turkeyfoot with nine points.

Shade 61 Conemaugh Valley 48: In East Taylor Township, Jenna Muha provided a game-high 26 points to go along with 17 rebounds and six assists to propel the Panthers over the Blue Jays.

Kennedy Landis amassed 16 points and 12 rebounds for Shade.

Somerset 47, Bedford 40: In Somerset, Eve Housley and Emily Rush each produced 13 points to lead the Golden Eagles past the Bisons.

Conemaugh Township 49, North Star 38: In Davidsville, Jon Updyke netted 18 points to lift Conemaugh Township over North Star.

Tanner Shirley contributed 15 points for Conemaugh Township.

Brady Weimer led North Star with 14 points, and Ethan Smith added 10.

Forest Hills 78, Somerset 44: In Somerset, Luke Housley contributed 13 points and Caleb Platt added 11 for the Golden Eagles in a setback to the Rangers.

Turkeyfoot 73, Salisbury-Elk Lick 60: In Confluence, Bryce Nicholson dropped in 21 points to propel the Rams over the Elks.

Chris Kozlowski produced 18 points and 13 rebounds while Bryce Schmidt added 20 points for Turkeyfoot.

Lance Jones paced Salisbury with 26 points. Drake Sellers scored 18 points and Walker Bunnell added 12.

Windber 49, Ferndale 20: In Windber, John Shuster recorded 11 points and seven rebounds as the Ramblers downed the Yellow Jackets.

Grady Klosky tallied 11 points, and Jonah Oyler swiped 10 steals for Windber.

Berlin Brothersvalley 91, Rockwood 45: In Rockwood, Ryan Blubaugh, Craig Jarvis and Pace Prosser each scored 19 points for the Mountaineers in a rout of the Rockets.

Caleb Platt led Somerset with 16 points. Dominic Heiple netted 15, Eli Mumau had 14 points and 12 rebounds, Aiden VanLenten tallied 14 points and Luke Housley added 10.

Girls basketball

Chestnut Ridge 54, Somerset 25: In New Paris, Eve Housley scored nine points in a setback to the Lions.

Meyersdale 51, Shade 45: In Meyersdale, Zoe Hetz recorded a team-high 17 points and Amelia Kretchman added 12 to propel the Red Raiders over the Panthers.

Jenna Muha delivered 27 points, 12 rebounds and seven steals for Shade.

Berlin Brothersvalley 65, Rockwood 29: In Rockwood, Jenny Countryman poured in 27 points and Grace Sechler added 13 as the Mountaineers downed the Rockets.

Kalynne Ohler led Rockwood with nine points.

Windber 62, Ferndale 33: In Windber, Lexie James recorded 16 points and eight rebounds as the Ramblers rolled past the Yellow Jackets.

Shyanne Schur tallied 10 points and 18 rebounds, Ava Hair provided 13 points and nine rebounds, and Makiah Schartiger added 13 points for Turkeyfoot.

Rifle

North Star 1,310, Salisbury-Elk Lick 867: Nicole Rininger fired a 278 as the Cougars romped the Elks.

Cody Snoeberger shot a 263 and Gracie Eshleman fired a personal best 257 for North Star.

Nolan Easton led Salisbury with a 246.

Conemaugh Township 1,360, Northern Cambria 1,291: Alex Boring shot a personal best 276 to guide Conemaugh Township to a victory.

Noah Lehman and Lydia Boring each fired a 276 to round out the top three for Conemaugh Township.

Wrestling

Somerset 52, Richland 12: In Richland Township, Michael Bridge, Logan Baker and Zane Hagans each won by fall to help the Golden Eagles down the Rams.

Deshonn Valentine won by a major decision 18-4, for Somerset.
