‘Top Gear’ host Chris Harris slams Rolls-Royce Cullinan: ‘I'm ashamed to be in it’

Top Gear host Chris Harris loves almost anything automotive, almost. The famed British auto journalist had some pretty harsh criticism for Rolls-Royce’s newest SUV, the Cullinan.

The Cullinan, which is named after the largest gem-quality diamond ever found, starts at $325,000 but can easily exceed half a million bucks after options. Despite the hefty price tag Harris described it saying, “It is, to use a technical, automotive term, utterly hideous to look at.”

While Harris may not think the luxury SUV looks good, many celebrities would disagree. Like NFL star Odell Beckham Jr. who celebrated his trade to the Cleveland Browns by purchasing an orange Cullinan, complete with his own personalized hood ornament in place of the Spirit of Ecstasy.

While driving the Cullinan, Harris said, “I'm in the flag-bearer for British engineering, a Rolls-Royce, and I'm ashamed to be in it.” He added, “I'm an apologist for the motor car — fast, big, inefficient. I'll defend them 'cause I love cars, I'm passionate about them but I cannot construct a defense for this car.”

With most auto manufacturers adding SUVs to their lineups, Harris doesn’t fault the luxury maker for building the 3-ton behemoth, but he does fault them for building what he calls a “cynical” vehicle.“It just feels like it was created to make money, raw greed,” said Harris, “Let's face it, there are too many rich people on this planet for this tasteless car not to exist.”

Top Gear airs Sundays at 8 p.m. on BBC America.
