These are the top 5 trends from the Kentucky Derby Festival's Macy's Spring Fashion Show

Spring fashion burst onto the stage at the Kentucky Derby Festival's Macy's Spring Fashion Show. After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, this season's trending looks were in full bloom at the 10th annual runway fashion event.

Creative consultant Christine Fellingham produced a spring-inspired fashion event with outfits and accessories from Macy’s, the show’s presenting sponsor, and looks from several local boutiques, including AFM Threads, Charlie’s Boutique, Da•da Apparel Co., Darling State of Mind, GUESS?, Inc., Magnolia & Fig, Mamili, Noted, Pretty Is As Pretty Does, Sapphire Boutique and That Cute Little Shop.

Bold, neon colors are a must for your Kentucky Derby outfit

The hottest styles and spring fashion trends returned to the runway Thursday as Macy’s presents the Kentucky Derby Festival Spring Fashion Show.

"I describe the colors of the season as 'solar-powered,'" Fellingham said. "I mean beautiful bright colors you'd see in a fantastic sunrise or sunset."

More specifically, get ready for a vibrant and popping color palette that includes lime green, saturated yellow, classic Kelly green, brilliant blue, hot pink, and sunset orange.

And if you don't go bright try head to toe white.

Walking the runway we spied a white mini dress with a plunging neckline and mesh-covered thigh-high slit teamed with a megawatt red headpiece, a white romper with puff sleeves topped with a platter sized hot pink feather fascinator and a men's white sports jacket and slacks paired with a bright floral shirt.

Big details add pizazz to your Kentucky Derby outfits

This spring, it's all in the details and that means ruching, smocking, bows, cut-outs, ruffles, fringe, slits, and sequins — almost anything unexpected adds interest and an unexpected splash of zhuzh to your Kentucky Derby wardrobe.

A stunning vibrant orange spaghetti strap mini dress covered in sequins worn with a pink and orange fascinator was the perfect example of color and detail in a single outfit.

"There is an exciting vibe to fashion this spring. It's like everything is eye-candy," Fellingham told The Courier Journal. "You'll see high-wattage colors, daring details and mood-driven clothing that are more like pieces of art."

Bare legs and midriffs ruled the runway

Get ready to show some skin this Kentuck Derby season.

Between the micro-minis (dresses and skirts), belly-baring midriffs, and off-the-shoulder and cold shoulder dresses and tops, the fashions at Thursday's Kentucky Derby Festival Spring Fashion Show made it clear its time to ditch the pandemic sweats.

Tiny black and brown leather miniskirts were a surprise for spring wear but added to the feeling that it's time to have a lot more fun with our fashion. And while you're at it, why not show off those shoulders you've been sculpting for the past two years?

Comfortable yet stylish clothes are here to stay

Designers are aware we've come to crave comfort during the past two years and that's not going away anytime soon. In fact, it was all over the runway.

"These are beautiful clothes that are also comfortable to wear," Fellingham told the Courier Journal. "Designers want people to look amazing but to feel comfortable while they dazzle."

Stretchy fabrics can be stylish when covered in sequins (yes, the sparkle is making its way into daywear in 2022.) Jumpsuits have returned with fresh twists like puffed sleeves or strappy backs. And for those who aren't keen on the micro-mini, feminine floor-length skirts in soft flowy fabrics appeared to float down the runway.

Big, brilliant headpieces make any Kentucky Derby outfit pop

Of course, no Kentucky Derby season fashion extravaganza in Kentucky is complete without hats. The Hat Girls, also known as Rachel Bell and Kate Smith, outdid themselves for this year's show. The dynamic Louisville duo are the Official Hat Designers of the Kentucky Derby Festival and the team specially designed more than 80 hats and fascinators for the show.

Big and brilliant, these headpieces, in bright orange, sunflower yellow, popping pink, peacock blue, and kelly green, topped off the spring fashions in a uniquely Kentucky way. You'll be sure to stun at the track if you do the same at the Kentucky Derby.
