TOMS RIVER - A 61-year-old township man is in critical condition at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune after he was struck by a motor vehicle on Vaughn and Windsor avenues on Monday evening, police said.
Carl Cereghini, 61, attempted to cross the intersection just before 5 p.m. when he was struck by the vehicle, which was traveling north on Vaughn Avenue, said Jillian Messina, a spokeswoman for the Toms River Police Department.

Cereghini suffered “serious injuries” and was airlifted to the regional trauma center, Messina said.

The driver of the vehicle told police that Cereghini stepped into the road in front of the vehicle with no time for the driver to avoid hitting him, Messina said.
The driver was not injured and there were no signs that the motorist was impaired, she said.
The accident is under investigation by Toms River Traffic Safety Officer Ryan Fitzgerald.
