Tommy's Tavern and Tap hoping to open in Edgewater, at former Pier 1 store on Hudson River

EDGEWATER — Tommy's Tavern + Tap is looking to expand into Bergen County and replace a vacant Pier 1 Imports store.

The restaurant is going through the Planning Board process for approval for a location at 225 River Road in the City Place promenade.

The application calls for converting 10,225 square feet of the former retail store into the next Tommy's Tavern + Tap.

Tommy Bonfiglio owns the American pub restaurants and Tio Taco + Tequila Bar.

During the pandemic, when most restaurants struggled, Bonfiglio's business thrived and he emerged with additional restaurants, growing from three to 10.

The sheer size of Tommy’s and Tio locations kept them afloat during the pandemic, Bonfiglio said in an interview in August. When no indoor or outdoor dining was allowed, the restaurants that were already open were repaired, cleaned and updated from top to bottom.

Tommy's Tavern + Tap has seven other locations: Sea Bright, Freehold Township, Staten Island, Princeton, Parsippany and Bridgewater, and its newest location in Clifton, which opened last December.

The next Planning Board hearing is scheduled in 2022. The applicant is requesting a parking variance approval. Under borough guidelines, a restaurant would require an additional 65 parking spaces, but no additional spaces are proposed.

Also on the extensive menu are 10-ounce burgers made with Grade-A beef ($15) and such sushi options as Tommy’s Roll, yellowtail, avocado, cucumber, jalapeno, salmon, pepper tuna and cilantro ($17, and Bonfiglio’s favorite).
