Tom Brady's trainer says Patriots QB wants to play until he's 46 or 47

Most NFL quarterbacks are out of the game by the time they hit 40, but at 42 Tom Brady is still going strong for the New England Patriots. And according to his trainer, he intends to keep going strong for years to come.

Alex Guerrero, Brady’s longtime personal trainer, went on Boston radio station WEEI on Thursday and talked about — what else? — Brady and his incredible longevity. While Brady has said in the past that his goal is to play until he’s 45, Guerrero revealed that Brady might be setting his sights a little higher now. From WEEI:

“It all comes to commitment, really. No one thought you could play at the elite level in your late 30s, early 40s. That is something we always felt we could do. I have really wanted to be there to help him accomplish that goal. I certainly do believe that 45 is a very realistic goal.

"We talk about it all the time. Every year he just adds another year. He goes in and he’s like, ‘Guys, I feel so good still. I think I am going to go till 45.’ I am like, ‘OK.’ Now he’s like, ‘Alex, I think I can go like 46 or 47.’”

Some players can’t quit the game (ahem, Brett Favre), and Brady might be one of them. But as long as he’s still performing at an elite level, there’s no reason for him to quit if he doesn’t want to. It seems unlikely that he would be the same Tom Brady when he’s 46 or 47, but a few years ago it also seemed unlikely that he would continue to be an elite QB at 42. Here we are in Brady’s age 42 season and he’s still performing like a top-tier quarterback.

The world should prepare itself for another 4-5 years of Brady, but we have no idea which team he might be playing with. He’s a free agent at the end of this season for the very first time in his 20-year career, and could part ways with the Patriots and sign with another team. Guerrero was asked about what Brady might do at the end of the current season, but he gave up zero information about which training camp Brady would be joining in July 2020.

“I don’t know. It’s not July 2020. I am focused on today. I am just trying to get Tom ready for practice today. It’s Thursday.”

Brady and Guerrero are focused on practice on Thursday and beating the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. Considering that Brady recently said that he’s still not over losing to the Eagles in Super Bowl LII, he probably has a lot of motivation this week.
