Tolland to amend charter to reflect voting district changes

Sep. 28—TOLLAND — The Town Council on Tuesday accepted changes to the town charter on voting districts.

While the changes are mandated via state redistricting, the council had to hold a public hearing to ratify changes to the charter. With no further discussion from the public or the council, the motion to accept the changes passed unanimously.

The charter outlines the current designation of what streets are included in the town's three districts, as well as where their polling places are.

Based on recent census data, the state redistricted a portion of the town, affecting just over 200 addresses.

Addresses on Weigold Road, Cedar Swamp Road, and Grant Hill Road will move from District 1 to District 3.

This will cause a change in the state representative for these addresses. Those represented by Republican Tim Ackert in the 8th District will now be represented by Republican Tammy Nuccio of the 53rd District.

All addresses on Gehring Road Extension will shift to District 1, thus moving from the 53rd District to the 8th District.

The addresses that are affected by this change will still vote at the Recreation Center.

Along with the redistricting, the council proposed that the residents of Parker Place, a senior housing complex at 100 Old Post Road, move from District 1 to District 2. This will allow the residents to vote next door at the Recreation Center rather than travel to the Senior Center.

"We're glad our registrars office worked very well with the state-mandated changes due to redistricting and also provided our senior residents at Parker Place a more-accessible voting option closer to where they live," Town Council Chairman Steve Jones said.
