Toddler dies after being hit by falling air conditioner

A 2-year-old girl was killed after she was hit by an air conditioning unit that fell from the window of an eight-floor apartment building in Toronto.

The girl's mother was going into the apartment building with her three children when the unit fell and landed on the girl, who was in her stroller, police told CTV News Toronto.

"I heard screaming,” a building resident, Sherene Bromfield, told CTV. "I ran on my balcony and I looked over and I could see her trying to revive her daughter."

Her mother, who was pushing the stroller, was unharmed. The toddler was rushed to the hospital by paramedics. She was later pronounced dead due to her injuries.

"The thought of something like that happen to somebody's child, there's no words," another resident said.

"Our thoughts are with the family at this difficult time and we offer them our sincere condolences," Toronto Community Housing, which manages the building, said in a statement.

Toronto Community Housing added that it will continue to review the incident and "take any appropriate action once the facts are known."

Police are reviewing surveillance footage and seeking witnesses in order to determine the sequence of events, CTV reported. However, Toronto police told CNN they will not be pursuing a criminal investigation of the accident.
