Titans move one step closer to keeping coach Chris Harris

When the Tennessee Titans hired defensive passing-game coordinator and cornerbacks coach Chris Harris back in January, it was with the stipulation that he’d join the team if he didn’t land a defensive coordinator job elsewhere.

Well, he now has one less option, as the San Francisco 49ers are reportedly hiring Steve Wilks as their next defensive coordinator, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. Harris had previously interviewed for the vacancy.

But Tennessee isn’t out of the woods with Harris yet, as the Houston Texans have reportedly put in a request to interview the former Washington Commanders coach for their defensive coordinator job.

If Tennessee can dodge that bullet, Harris will be a great addition, as he’s highly thought of in the coaching ranks. The interest he’s receiving for defensive coordinator jobs only spells that out further.

Even if Harris does end up with the Titans, it might be a short stay, as he’ll likely be up for open defensive coordinator jobs in the next hiring cycle.

However, if Tennessee’s current defensive coordinator, Shane Bowen, is poached for a head-coaching gig next offseason, the Titans will have a solid in-house option to replace him in Harris, who would likely be viewed as the top candidate.
