Gregg Berhalter's USA are through to the last 16 at the World Cup having narrowly secured second place in Group B following a 1-1 draw with Wales, a 0-0 draw against England and a 1-0 win over Iran.

The USA, who missed out on the tournament in 2018, will now need to beat Louis van Gaal's Netherlands if they hope to reach the quarter finals in Qatar.

Berhalter says there is no danger of the United States being underprepared against the Netherlands – after studying Van Gaal’s side in detail for 11 months.

Whereas Van Gaal admitted he had not seen the USA before watching their opening Group B draw against Wales less than a fortnight ago, the US have compiled an extraordinary dossier of information on their last 16 opponents.

“We have been watching Holland for the last 11 months, watching all their games,” Berhalter said. “We have had multiple people at their group stage games, watching live, doing a deep dive. All the information was presented to us immediately after the Iran win. We started preparing then.

"It is literally one game at a time, one minute at a time. In the knock-out stages, anything makes a difference."

Berhalter can also draw on his experience of playing in the Netherlands, where he spent six years in the 1990s with Zwolle, Sparta Rotterdam and Cambuur – and the enduring memory of beating Van Gaal’s Ajax. Van Gaal has said that he does not remember the game, but Berhalter disagrees.

“I think he remembers – being that competitive he has to,” he said

Here is what you can expect from the Netherlands vs USA battle – and how to watch all the action on the day.

When is the USA vs Netherlands game?

The game between the Netherlands and the USA is set to take place at 3pm UK time (6pm in Qatar, 10am ET, 9am CT and 7am PT) on Saturday, December 3.

If a winner is not found after 90 minutes, the game will go into 30 minutes of extra time. If there is still a stalemate, a penalty shootout will then decide who goes through to the next round.

Where will it take place?

The game will be played in the Khalifa International Stadium, seven miles outside Doha city centre. It is the oldest of the stadiums being used during the Qatar World Cup, having been built in 1976, but was revamped ahead of the 2022 tournament to increase spectator capacity to 45,857.

It is named after Qatar’s former Emir, Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani, and has been the home stadium for the national team since its construction.

What TV channel is it on?

Soccer fans in America can tune into the action on FOX TV.

In the UK, the match will be shown live on both ITV and the BBC. It will also be possible to stream it and catch-up on BBC iPlayer.

Head-to-head record

The two sides have met five times before but only for international friendlies. During these meetings, the Netherlands have dominated winning 2-0 in 1998, 2-0 in 2002, 1-0 in 2004, and 2-1 in 2010. The USA's only victory came in 2015 when they secured a 4-3 win.

What are the USA saying?

A victory on Saturday against the Netherlands would put the USA in the quarterfinals for the first time since 2002.

President Joe Biden took note of the victory over Iran when speaking in Bay City, Michigan.

"They did it! God love 'em," Biden said.

Berhalter credits the Netherlands with shaping his footballing knowledge – and hopes to use it against them on Saturday.

“It is almost like what concepts haven’t I taken from Dutch football?” he said. “I learned so much in Holland, it was a great experience being there. When you are in Holland after every training session you basically have a debate with your players about it, after every game you speak with people about it. They love to discuss soccer and you learn a lot.

“I went to Holland just after university and was totally unprepared for the professional level. If I wasn’t in Holland I wouldn’t have had that building that shaped my ideas – just about spacing, positioning, the third man, triangles. All those details.

“I remember there was an old striker I played with when I first got to Holland and he would yell at me for giving him the ball with too much spin – he wanted them straight, so I had to hit the ball with my laces and I wasn’t good enough to do that so I had to practice to give him the pass he wanted.

"If you ever laid a ball off to someone on their wrong foot they would start yelling. There were a lot of details I was missing that I learned. You saw how Ajax used to stretch the field and really made it difficult for the opponent."

Berhalter says he is unsurprised by the criticism Van Gaal has received for Holland’s playing style given the attitudes in the country. “I am laughing because there is always criticism in Holland. How many coaches are there in Holland? 17 million?"

"I heard the same thing in 2014 [when Van Gaal’s Holland finished third at the World Cup], and I also remember playing away in Ajax and we were losing 1-0 and Ajax were whistled off the field because they only had one goal.

"Louis has tough enough skin. He realises that his job is to deliver wins. I am sure he is focused on guiding his team to the final. He has a way to win wherever he goes. If I am the Dutch public I wouldn’t worry too much, I would just wait and see.”

What are the Netherlands saying?

A typically belligerent Netherlands head coach Louis van Gaal took issue with criticism of his side's World Cup performances so far despite them topping Group A.

Even though they had very few alarms in their opening three matches, Van Gaal was grilled in his post-match press conference about why the games were not particularly enjoyable to watch.

"I'm not going to expand on it because I think you have a different opinion of football," he said to one journalist.

"Why don't you write you think it is terribly boring and you are going home tomorrow because you couldn't care less?"

When it was put to him fans were "grinding their teeth" on social media about the displays Van Gaal responded: "That's disappointing but I don't agree with you.

"That's your opinion but I don't think your opinion is the correct opinion. I think everyone would be rather proud we are progressing to the next round.

"I think things are not as bad as you say they are."
