Tim Duncan teams up with the Clintons to bring children's education initiative to Virgin Islands

San Antonio Spurs legend Tim Duncan continued his philanthropy to the U.S. Virgin Islands with a substantial donation to expand his education initiative to his homeland.

He teamed up with former President Bill Clinton and former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton over the weekend to spread the word about his program and the ongoing recovery efforts after hurricanes in September 2017.

Duncan donates $500,000 to USVI

The five-time NBA champion’s Tim Duncan Foundation gave $500,000 to begin expanding the Yes! Our Kids Can (YOKC) initiative to the island.

Yes! Our Kids Can works to “disrupt generation poverty” by preparing children intellectually and emotionally, per its website, and engaging entire families. The nonprofit was established in 2016 in San Antonio, and provides children with classroom tablets that have lessons, motivational songs, videos and games. It intends to keep children engaged, keep them working hard in school and give them hope they can continue their education into high-paying careers, whether it be via college or trade school.

Duncan told KSAT 12 in San Antonio he was approached about the program recently and discussed bringing it to the Virgin Islands with long-time girlfriend Vanessa Macias.

“I was blown away by it. I went home and told Vanessa about it. She said we need to take this program and implement it in the Virgin Islands because it is easy to do and it will have a great impact on the kids, not only for the short term but the long term,” said Duncan. “We’re very excited about it and I know it will do great things for the kids of the Virgin Islands.”

Macias was in the Caribbean with Duncan and shared on Twitter it was an “incredible day” that left her “in awe” of Duncan’s support. He donated money and supplies immediately after the devastating 2017 hurricane season.

Clintons promote Duncan’s work

The Clinton family and its foundation are working to improve conditions on the Caribbean islands after the hurricanes and help them brace for future storms. Bill and Hillary met with Duncan on Sunday during one of their conferences on helping the area.

In a nod to their numbers of sorts, Bill Clinton’s press secretary shared a photo of “42 & 21.”

The Clinton Global Initiative met in January for a two-day conference on the island and the former President announced dozens of upcoming projects to help the Caribbean islands recover from the hurricanes.

They include projects to provide clean water, deliver solar power and improve technology. Duncan’s organization became part of that.

The Clintons made another return trip to the island for a fourth meeting of the CGI Action Network to discuss post-disaster recovery efforts. They met with Duncan to promote his cause and all three spoke with Rep. Stacey Plaskett about the island’s early head start program.

As another hurricane season begins, organizations are upping efforts to aid the islands.
