TikTokers are making deep-fried Pop-Tarts at home — so we tried the wild recipe hack ourselves
Are deep-fried Pop-Tarts even better than the original, popular childhood treat?
For anyone who grew up after Pop-Tarts were introduced in 1964, they are one of the greatest snacks in existence. But whether it’s which is the best flavor — or whether or note they’re considered ravioli — these sweet little pastries can be an actual source of controversy.
And thanks to TikTok, we have a new Pop-Tart debate: Should we be deep-frying these things?
TikTok chef @trendychef_ makes a compelling case. His viral recipe video turns Pop-Tarts into a full-on state fair food, complete with a fried outer layer and a sweet, sprinkle-filled topping.

But are deep-fried Pop-Tarts really better than regular ones? To find out, we gave this recipe a try ourselves.

How to make deep-fried Pop-Tarts
To make our Pop-Tarts, we went with a small variation on @trendychef_’s recipe, although most steps are the same. Here’s what you need:
Pop-Tarts (whatever flavor you like most)
2 cups of Bisquick baking mix
1 cup of milk
2 eggs
2 tablespoons of sugar
8-10 cups of vegetable or canola oil
Whipped cream
Sprinkles
Maraschino cherries
To start, combine the Bisquick, milk, eggs and sugar in a large bowl. Then heat your oil in a large saucepan or deep fryer.
Once the oil is ready, fully coat your Pop-Tarts in the batter and drop them into the oil. Work one at a time, flipping the Pop-Tarts often and removing them once the coating is golden brown.
Then let the pastries cool a bit before adding whipped cream, sprinkles and a cherry — or whatever toppings you prefer. And you’re ready to dig in!
Overall, we found these things to be insanely delicious. They may not be better than the greatest Pop-Tart flavors, but they’re pretty high up there. The prep isn’t too difficult, and the payoff is a gooey, crispy, mega-sweet twist on an already incredible snack. We’d definitely recommend giving this a try.
