Tiger Woods equals all-time record with 82nd win
Tiger Woods has won a record-equalling 82nd PGA Tour title after victory at the Zozo Championship in Japan.
Woods, 43, finished three shots ahead of Hideki Matsuyama to match the record of Tour wins previously held by Sam Snead set in 1965.
Snead was 52 when he won his final title so Woods, who has suffered with numerous injury issues in his career, will be hoping to surpass his fellow American in the years ahead.
“Unfortunately I went through some rough patches with my back and didn’t play for a number of years, so that record seemed like it was out of reach,” he said after the win at the Narashino Country Club. “It’s about consistency and doing it for a long period of time.
“Sam did it into his 50s and I’m in my early to mid 40s.”
The win came just weeks after undergoing knee surgery, the latest in a long line of operations including spinal fusion in 2017.
Woods completed one the all-time great sporting comebacks earlier this year, winning his fifth Masters title and fifteenth major in total.
His last major win before that came at the 2008 US Open, and Woods is more optimistic about his fitness and future going forward.
“As far as playing until 52, I hope that's the case,” he added. “If you would have asked me a few years ago, I would have given you a different answer, but certainly the future looks brighter than it has.
“The body can't do what it used to but I can still think my way around the golf course.
“I know how to play and I was able to do that this week. There was a time if I didn't know if I would play again so I am very appreciative.”
