Thursday's HS sports highlights: Claymont girls basketball rolls past East Canton

Bailey Eddleman scored 17 points and Emily Grant added 12 as host Claymont rolled to a 61-37 Inter-Valley Conference crossover girls basketball win Thursday night.

The Mustangs (6-8, 2-5), who also got nine points from Emma Woodward, jumped out to a 19-1 lead after one quarter, led 36-19 at the half and 51-23 going to the fourth quarter.

Tori Reichard led East Canton (3-13, 3-7) with 12 points.

Claymont's JV team won 37-16 as Lauren Doane led the Mustangs with 25 points.

The 1981 Claymont Lady Mustangs State Championship basketball team will be honored on Saturday during the Claymont-Indian Valley girls basketball games.

The games will be played at Claymont High School with the JV starting at 1 p.m.

The team plus the top 20 all-time scorers will be recognized between the JV and varsity games.

With crowd restrictions at basketball games last year the 40th anniversary of the 1981 State Championship season was not able to be recognized.

Beaver Local 33, Harrison Central 32

Beaver Local scored the last seven points of the game, with Kylie Narry hitting two go-ahead free throws with throws with 13 seconds left. as the visiting Beavers nipped Harrison Central to spoil Senior Night for the Huskies

Harrison Central missed a go-ahead shot attempt at the buzzer to fall to 8-7.

Halle Jordan scored 14 points, who had three fourth quarter 3-pointers, and Peyton Roberts added 11 for the winners (6-6).

“This is definitely a tough one to swallow," said Harrison Central head coach Nick Yourkovich. "We did not take advantage of the opportunity to pull away and let them hang around long enough to outplay us at the end.”

Senior McKayla Dunkle led Harrison Central with 21 points and 12 rebounds.

“McKayla has been a special player for us for the past four years, and I’m disappointed that I didn’t do more to help us get a win on Senior Night," said Yourkovich. "We still have a lot to play for the next few games, so we will have to regroup quickly and get ready for Union Local.”

The teams were tied 8-8 after the opening quarter. Harrison Central was up 13-12 at the half and took a 23-18 lead into the final frame.

Harrison Central's JV team won 29-12.

Coshocton 44, River View 40

Host Coshocton was looking for its first win and took a 38-20 lead into the fourth quarter.

River View nearly rallied before Coshocton held on for a victory in a non-league contest at The Wigwam.

Savannah Bartlett collected 16 points, Keeley Murray added 13 points, Hailey Helter scored eight and Isabelle Lauvray added seven for Coshocton (1-11).

Aaliyah Better finished with 17 points to pace the Lady Bears (2-14), while Alivia Spaulding added 10 points, Lily Yoder chipped in seven points and Lauren Killiany had six to round out the scoring.

Better and Spaulding combined for eight points in the first quarter to help River View take a 10-7 lead through one quarter, Helter had six points, Bartlett added four points and Lauvray hit a 3 to put Coshocton up 24-14 at the half.

Bartlett had seven points and Murray added five as the Lady 'Skins pushed their lead to 38-20 entering the fourth.

Killiany and Better each knocked down two 3s and Yoder also made a triple to help the Lady Bears nearly complete the rally.

The JV game ended in a 12-12 tie.

Canton South 45, Carrollton 40

Host Canton South knocked off Canton South in an Eastern Buckeye Conference contest.

Bowling

New Phila vs. Canton South

Host New Philadelphia swept Canton South at Boulevard Lanes.

The New Phila girls won 1,901-1,676 led by Hannah Trimble's 335 series (167-168) and Maggie Compher's 321 (142-179).

Chalyse Minor led Canton South with a 355 and Katie Telareli added a 324.

The New Phila boys won 2,346-2,212 as Alex Knisely led the way with a 396.

Canton South was led by Trevor Gore's 374.

Wrestling

Indian Valley 38, Tuslaw 30

The Braves were clinging to a 32-30 lead as the match came down to the heavyweight match.

Indian Valley’s Joe Reynolds won by pin to seal the win for the visiting Braves.

Also winning by pin for the Braves were Hunter Albright (126) and Easton Cook (215). Winning by technical fall was Remington Myers (165). Other winners for the Braves were Will Holland (113), Quake Beaty (132), and Jaxon Burcher (175).

Carrollton 54, Alliance 21

Host Carrollton defeated Alliance in an Eastern Buckeye Conference battle to improve to 13-4 overall in duals and 4-0 in the league.
