Girls Soccer

Merritt Island 2, Titusville 0

On the night of its 35th anniversary game, Merritt Island defeated Titusville 2-0 after two goals late in the second half.

The Mustangs honored former coaches Harry and Scott Carswell before the game. Harry Carswell was the first girls soccer coach at Merritt Island and built the girls soccer program from scratch.

Scott Carswell, Harry's son, coached at Merritt Island as well and won three state championship as head coach. He is now the coach at Eastern Florida State College where he won an NJCAA national championship this season.

"Harry took on the role of starting the women's program and I think that is a big accomplishment," current head coach Nathan Trout said. "For him and Scott to have built the program to where it is and with me trying to continue that on with the girls we have, it has been a great time."

The Mustangs honored several former players before the game. Trout said it was cool for him and his team to hear some of the stories the former players told.

Merritt Island capped off the ceremony with a win. Both teams went scoreless in the first half and Merritt Island goalie Julianna Trujillo managed to keep Titusville from scoring in the second half.

The Mustangs got on the board after a Dani Grenon header at the 17-minute mark of the second half. Kyleigh Trout scored one last goal with less than a minute left in the match to ice the Mustangs' 2-0 victory.

"There was too much kick ball in the first half," Nathan Trout said. " I thought in the second half we played a little tougher and kept the ball on our side of the field a little more to have more opportunities."

Merritt Island improves to 6-0-1 for the season and will face Cocoa on Tuesday.
