Three‑way race shapes up in city council District 6

Aug. 5—The special election to represent District 6 on Toledo City Council won't be as crowded as the at‑large primary happening on the same day next month, with three candidates filing Thursday to run for the seat representing North and West Toledo.

Theresa Morris, a former staffer in U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur's office, was appointed to fill the district's vacancy in April and is running to keep her seat through 2023.

"This is the one bite at the apple," said Ms. Morris, who noted that unlike the at‑large primary, the only District 6 election this year is happening on Sept. 14.

She'll face Republicans Kimberly Adkins and James Nowak, neither of whom could immediately be reached for comment.

Mr. Nowak, an attorney from Point Place, has previously run for the seat and serves on the Point Place Business Association.

The three‑person special election is being decided on the same day as the contest between about two dozen candidates vying for six citywide council seats.

Ms. Morris, 50, is a Toledo native and worked in Ms. Kaptur's office for 27 years before retiring to take the job on city council. She's been endorsed by the Lucas County Democratic Party.

"It's a privilege to serve your community and I'm lucky I've been able to do it in two different venues, and I hope I continue to do it," she said.

Ms. Morris said she's still learning the job but is focused on how to spend the $188 million from the federal government from the last coronavirus rescue package and how to repair infrastructure, hopefully with help from a federal infrastructure bill.

"Those are going to be the two biggest things, trying to see how we can intelligently and wisely spend money to advance the city into the next 50 years," she said.

She replaced another Democrat, Chris Delaney, who resigned earlier this year to focus on a new full‑time job.
