3 people injured in Wilmington house fire Saturday afternoon

Three residents were injured during a Wilmington house fire that was deemed accidental on Saturday afternoon, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

The blaze occurred shortly before 5 p.m. in the first block of Atkins Ave. where flames engulfed the front of the house, officials said. Three residents, including two children, ages 6 and 8, were taken to a local hospital for smoke inhalation.

The fire began in the porch of the house where a cardboard box full of sawdust from wood flooring spontaneously ignited and engulfed items in the porch, officials said. The fire caused an estimated $20,000 worth of damage to the home.

The three residents are in good condition and are expected to be released after treatment, officials said. In total, the fire displaced two adults and two children.
