Thousands Of DiGiorno Frozen Pizzas Are Being Recalled Due To Undeclared Allergens
A packaging mistake is leading to tens of thousands of pounds of frozen DiGiorno pizza to be recalled. The pizza, labeled as the Crispy Pan Crust Pepperoni Pizza, might actually contain a three meat pizza instead.
While this might not seem like a big deal, for anyone with a soy allergy, this could be dangerous. The three meat pizza contains a textured soy protein, which is not labeled on the carton for pepperoni pizza. Because of the misbranding and undeclared allergen, Nestle issued the recall of almost 28,000 pounds of frozen pizza.
The pizzas in question were produced on June 30, 2021 with a “Best Buy” date of March 2022. Each comes in a 26-ounce container with the label DiGiorno Pepperoni Crispy Pan Crust and lot code 1181510721. The recall was issued after a consumer complained after receiving a three meat pizza instead of a pepperoni pizza as the carton was labeled.
No reports of allergic reactions due to consumption have been confirmed, but make sure to check your freezers if you've recently purchased a DiGiorno Pepperoni Crispy Pan Crust. If someone with a soy allergy were to consume the mislabeled pizza, they could have an adverse reaction and potentially have a life threatening reaction called anaphylaxis. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service is urging consumers not to eat the product and instead, discard it or return it to the place of purchase.
