"Thor: Love And Thunder" Dropped A New Trailer And There Are Some New Characters We Gotta Talk About

Thor: Love and Thunder just recently dropped their full trailer, which gave us the first look at a few new characters that we might not be too familiar with unless you're up to date with the comics. I figured there's no better time to properly introduce you to some of these key characters from the trailer that we will be getting our first introduction to in this latest Thor film.

Jane Foster's Mighty Thor

It was no secret that we would see Mighty Thor in the MCU, as director Taika Watiti announced Natalie Portman's return to the Thor franchise at San Diego Comic-Con back in 2019. We got an excellent glimpse of her in the original teaser released a month ago. However, this latest trailer gave us a little more insight into how the relationship between her and Thor will be throughout this film. In the comics, Jane is bestowed her power after Thor is deemed unworthy to lift Mjolnir, and Jane is somehow able to make it to the moon where it resides to become the new protector of Earth. Jane and Thor team up with her new power to take down Malekith, who you might remember from Thor: The Dark World.

Jane's story though gets a little tragic when it's discovered that Jane has been battling breast cancer, and every time she transforms into Mighty Thor the effects of her treatment for her cancer are reversed. This could be a plotline they follow in the film, as it's been eight years, seven months, and six days since Thor and Jane have seen each other. It would make sense as to why Taika was keen on bringing Jane back to the franchise, as this storyline would not only give a tragic twist to Jane's return but also display her heroism as she is willing to save others at the cost of her health. Can't wait to see how it all plays out.
Gorr the God Butcher

Taika Waititi was recently quoted as saying “...in my humble opinion, we have probably the best villain that Marvel’s ever had in Christian Bale.” This isn't anything shocking for a director to say about his movie's villain, but considering we know just how great Christian Bale is as an actor, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Bale deliver a phenomenal performance. His character's Shakespearian backstory will be interesting to see onscreen, as his first appearance in 2012's comic book Thor: God of Thunder made him a fan favorite.

Gorr's tragic history destroys his faith in the Gods and sets him on the warpath for vengeance. After being exiled from his tribe for speaking blasphemy against the Gods, Gorr comes across a battle between what he believes to be two Gods and receives the symbiote necro-sword All Black after its previous wielder Knull became incapacitated. This newfound power gave Gorr the strength he needed to take on the Gods and did so in a brutal fashion. Considering we got to see a piece of the symbiote stay behind in the Spiderman: No Way Home post-credits scene, I am curious if the film will give the sword the same symbiote history it has in the comics, which would further tie Venom to the MCU.
Zeus
His origin is just as similar to the Greek mythology that his character is derived from; in the comics, the Olympians have formed alliances with not only Asgardians but with the Eternals as well. I can imagine that there will be an overall meeting of the Gods across all pantheons and dimensions, as Gorr isn't prejudiced in his hunt for revenge. Russell Crowe seems to fully commit to playing this version of Zeus with his spot-on accent and flamboyance; I'm all for it.
Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder
These two fiercesome mystical goats are based on the goats of Norse mythology, Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjóstr. In the comics, they have helped Thor not only by flying his chariot around through the different realms, but Thor tasked Toothgnasher to guard Mjolnir in another dimension at one point. They have already made their debut in the animated series Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, but it'll be good to see them now on the big screen, crashing into what it looks like to be Olympus in the trailers.
Uatu the Watcher
Now granted, he isn't new to the MCU, but to this franchise, he would be. In this hall where Jane Foster's Thor is raising Mjolnir to the sky for an amazing lightning strike, we see a few Cosmic Entities that have had a significant effect in the Marvel comics. Most notably, we see The Watcher, Uatu, who we got to see in What If...? make an appearance here, which could foreshadow a cameo from him. However, it'd be wild in what context he would be in the movie, but if any of these were to play into the storyline, this could be huge. For me, this is a stretch. Still, considering we have been introduced to Uatu already and things got undone in Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it's not outside the realm of possibility to hear Jeffrey Wright's voice come in for a post-credit scene to explain to Thor the threat of an incursion.
