Thompson completes rare AHSAA Super 7 three-peat with 38-22 win over Central-Phenix City

BIRMINGHAM – Thompson completed a rare three-peat in dominant fashion at the AHSAA Super 7.

The Warriors beat Central-Phenix City, wire-to-wire, 38-22, in the Class 7A state championship.

Thompson (13-1) became the first program to three-peat in the state's largest classification since Hoover from 2012-14. Hoover's first two titles in that run were in 6A. The last was the first year Alabama had 7A.

Thompson is the first team to three-peat in 7A.

The 2021 AHSAA Super 7 Class 7A state championship began too similar to the 2020 iteration for Thompson.

Thompson quarterback Conner Harrell, a North Carolina commit, left with an injury in the first quarter, reminiscent of when he departed and didn't return in last season's comeback state championship win.

His backup, sophomore Zach Sims, threw a touchdown on his first pass as Harrell eventually returned and shined in his final high school game.

Harrel returned during the second quarter and found Utah commit Ryan Peppins for a 6-yard touchdown. Harrell, 2020 7A state player of the year, finished 10 of 16 for 271 yards with two touchdowns passing and one touchdown rushing.

Peppins finished with seven receptions for 203 yards and two touchdowns receiving. Alabama commit Trequon Fegans and his freshman brother Anquon each caught an interception.

Fourteen of Central's points came in the last minute when Thompson's starters were out.
