Thin sliver of Texas could see tornadoes, damaging winds and hail overnight
Parts of East Texas are within range of severe thunderstorms — some capable of spawning tornadoes — later this afternoon and overnight, forecasters say.
“Tornadoes, very large hail and severe wind gusts are expected this afternoon into the overnight period across parts of the lower to mid Mississippi Valley, Mid-South and parts of the Southeast. A few strong tornadoes will be possible,” according to severeweatheroutlook.com.
North and Central Texas, according to severeweatheroutlook.com maps, will be spared the brunt of the storms. Houston and a thin sliver of East Texas, however, are within range. Dallas-Fort Worth will experience freezing temperatures overnight but things will warm up later Wednesday.
The instability is formed by the flow of warmer air from the Gulf lifting a stable front. The storms could deliver tornadoes, damaging winds and hail. Flooding is also an issue in Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas.
Severe thunderstorms in the fall and winter tend to take people by surprise because this type of weather occur less during colder months, Bill Bunting, chief of forecast operations at the Storm Prediction Center, told CNN Weather.
Tornadoes forming overnight is a greater threat because warning people of the danger is much harder.
