How Texans can conserve energy to help prevent another power grid failure

Texas officials are asking residents to ease up on energy use this week because of more issues with the state’s power grid.

ERCOT — the Electric Reliability Council of Texas — is urging residents to limit electricity usage to prevent a repeat of the deadly February power grid failure that left millions without power and water for days. The hottest temperatures of the year the past two days have put a strain on the state’s power generators.

So what can you do to help? ERCOT is suggesting the following conservation methods for Texas residents:

  • Turn off any unnecessary lights and equipment

  • Turn your thermostat up 2 to 3 degrees, preferably to 78 degrees

  • Set programmable thermostats to higher temperatures when no one is home

  • Use fans to feel 4 to 6 degrees cooler

  • Limit use of large appliances (dishwasher, washer, dryer, etc.)

  • If you cook indoors, use a microwave or slow cooker, not your oven

  • Close blinds and drapes during late afternoon to keep house cooler

  • Schedule pool pumps to run in the early morning or overnight hours

  • If you’re not using something, turn it off and unplug it if possible
