Tesla Model S, X Replace Old Lead-Acid 12v Battery With Li-Ion: Reports
Tesla Inc (NASDAQ: TSLA) was known for sometimes having 12-volt battery issues. Although Tesla's vehicles are technologically advanced, the cars still used the legacy 12v lead-acid batteries for auxiliary power. And for whatever reason, Tesla's vehicles seemed to kill the 12v faster than most other cars.
Now with Tesla's Model S and X refresh, Electrek reports Tesla has replaced the 12v lead-acid battery with a more modern Li-ion battery.
“With the new S/X, we are also are finally transitioning to a Li-ion 12-volt battery," CEO Elon Musk told Sandy Munro. "It has way more capacity and the cycle life matches the main battery pack. We should have done that before, but it’s great that we are doing it now.”
This means the 12v battery should have the same life as the main battery pack, which normally lasts the life of the vehicle.
Tesla currently offers a 150,000 mile, eight-year warranty on new S and X vehicles. The new 12v battery will also be easier to keep charged or recharge, so owners won't have to worry about the battery going dead.
